Navy For Moms

This was a question that was posted to the wall by Gayle, mom of Emily, Cincinnati ...I felt that it was such an important question that I didnt want it to get lost in the shuffle....Please anyone with any ideas, advise, suggestions or just a kind encouraging word post it so that others that have the same question or concern can get the info.

Do any of you moms with daughters have this same concern. Emily wants a career in the Navy, she'll be a NUKE. However, she also wants a family. She LOVES children and would like a houseful although realistically probably not that many. Are any of your daughters expressing concerns about how to be in the Navy and a mom as well?

Gayle, my cousin is active duty Navy and just gave birth. It is possible. I believe it is up to the discretion of the Navy if they want to renew your contract based on pregnancy desires/occurrences. but my cuz has not had any issues, she gave birth 2 weeks ago and they still plan on sending her to officer school. She is good at her job and her Chief is behind her. Just depends on the seaman and the Chief

Susan... Emily considered just a hitch then maybe start a family. However, the pay/bonuses for NUKEs is really good and she didn't want to go through all that training and then quit. The Navy invests a lot of money in her training and offers bonuses as incentives to keep their NUKES from jumping to the private sector after their obligation. Because of the length of her training, she'll be obligated to 6 years as I understand it. So on one hand, she hates to quit, but doesn't have any idea how she'll manage a family when she'll be at sea 6 mo. of the year. I guess a lot depends on future circumstances...her husband, support system, etc. etc. The answer might become clear as time progresses.

My cousin Colleen has been in the Navy nearly 20 years now and she has had 3 children. She started off in air traffic control and she now works at the Pentagon. Her Husband is also in the Navy and they have managed very well. I think it is quite possible to have both, but that being said I am not familiar with the demands of being a Nuke.
