Navy For Moms

I got this idea from Molly on the wall. I thought it was a good idea. You can either post a question that you know the answer to and just want to make sure others know the answer to or you can ask a question and someone will answer. Anyone can make the question(s) of the day. So if you have anything at all big or small to ask go ahead and ask away!

I have a question, how often do they call the deppers sooner than thier start date? My son is Nov. 16, 2009 but asked for an earlier date if it comes up.

I'm not sure how this works, but my son is due to leave for BC Sept. 15... and his recruiter left a message saying someone backed out of their contract and asked if he was ready to leave the following day. However my son was skin diving for the weekend and his cell phone died... so he got the message too late. That was about 2 weeks ago. I believe the dates have to do with the jobs and contracts they are under as well.

Perhaps some seasoned moms can shed more light for you.

I have heard that this is common about this time of the year --- the high schoolers sign up then decide to *hang out for the summer* so they delay the original date and that leaves them open for others.

heres the low down to the question above. ....

When a new sailor signs a contract and gets there entry date, that then becomes there "ship date" this date is solid unless the depper asks for it to change, becomes unqualied for it through either legal, school, medical, moral or drugs. If your son or daughter would like to leave early there are a few things that go into that.

this time of the year alot of seats can come open, due to kids failing high school.

First, if they want to leave in the same job they are essentially waiting for another kid to loose there seat based of one of the criteria above. if they are willing to take another job, provided its available and they qualify for it, they are still waiting on one of the criteria above, but increase there chances a little.

as a navy recruiter i can tell you based of navy retention, and recruiting efforts, it is not impossible to leave early, but it is very difficult for us to get a seat.

in the meanwhile while your new sailor is in dep make sure they are working on there PQS book, by finishing this book they can get promoted and advanced to E-2 while in boot camp, this is around a 250 dollar pay raise.

good luck.

A big THANKS goes to Molly for putting it on the wall....but I thought that since there are so many posts on the wall and things get moved to other pages pretty fast that I would make it a discussion :) THANK YOU MOLLY!

It all depends on the Navy's needs and what he signed his contract for. Since the Navy is 99.8% full, someone will have to delay their enlistment or wash out or not re-up for anyone going early.

I believe this is Pass In Review, the graduation ceremony. How did I do?

PIR is Pass in Review or Graduation from Boot Camp. BTW, on the right side of this page is called "Navy Speak" There is a spot on there where you can type in the abbreviation and learn what it means.
