Navy For Moms

My husband received a message from a relative on Navydads.com and we were reminded that those going to pre-BUD's and BUd's need to go to their myspace and facebook accounts and take personal pictures that might be embarassing, inappropriate or compromising in general off. The NSW will tell them to do this during those classes, but they don't have much time to get it done. The NSW does go out and check those sites and they may just give them ammo for playful harrasment. They also want us to participate in OPSEC. Anyway, something to think about and work on before they leave and for us to possibly work on as well.

We all want to share how proud we are of our future sailors, but we have to make sure that they are always safe and that their missions are safe and uncompromised.

Good reminder Kim for anyone whose Recruit is going into any kind of Spec Opps! I don't have either a Facebook or Myspace page (partially for this reason, partly because I spend enough time on here as it is!) but will probably be having to edit my N4Ms page soon and make some things private and viewable only to my friends. It stinks socially, but it's still our job to protect them in this way! Loose lips sink ships, a photo tells a story-and maybe gives more info than you meant to! :)

I hope that everyone agrees that this should be featured. Great information to keep right on front page for many reasons!

Good to know Kim, I will have my son check his pictures. We usually do not post anything that is embarassing or inappropriate. Have a good week :D

Thanks Kim, Will keep that in mind for the future!

This is great information. My son informed me last week that he had already discontinued his facebook page but I will drive that home with him again just to make sure. I myself am pretty technologically backward and have a difficult time posting pictures anyway so no problem there. This is a good discussion to feature since so many are so active online these days.

My son went and deleted his site before he left and we reminded other family members this week that they needed to either delete his pictures or make it so that they don't know who he is by any descriptions that might give him away. It is kind of hard on the rest of the family as well, as they are proud of all their family and don't want to leave anyone out. This will be a new journey for all of us.

All future Sailors, Special Opps or not, should be VERY careful with what is on their FB and MySpace accounts. I am a big Facebook fan, and my son will not allow me to post a picture of him on mine. We seriously cannot be too careful!
