Before Craig left and went to MEPS we went to about.com and looked at the jobs. He wrote down 10 jobs that interested him. Starting with the one that interested him most on down. His recruiter said that with a 61 on the ASVAB he would be able to pick from alot of different jobs because that was a higher score (obviously not as high as NUKE LOL). He went to MEPS and went down the list. All of his jobs were taken except #10. His last choice. He was ok with Corpsman but he really wanted to go in as MA first and the other jobs were working with the planes. There are alot of folks that dont know that there is a link where you can look up jobs and pick a few before you go. I will post it here. I suggest before you leave check it out and choose a few incase your first choice dosent pan out.....
There was a discussion back in Nov '08 posted by a Mom whose son chose to walk away and not enlist at that time (he went back later) because they couldn't give him the job he wanted. He had done his homework and wanted to be a Seabee. Here were a couple informative replies by two of our "in the know" members that I thought might be helpful...

Keep in mind that while the recruiter might have an idea of what is open, it's the classifier at MEPS who does the actual assignment. If the job isn't available in his computer, he can't offer it.

Congrats to your son for sticking to his guns. I didn't, and I ended up in a different job - it worked out okay, but at first, I wasn't too happy. There is also a rate called Electricians Mate (EM) or an Aviation Electrions Mate (AE). If he wants Seabee, go for Seabee, and don't sign until it's open. The recruiter isn't happy because he wants to get your son to enlist since it's his job. They try to meet the "Needs of the Navy" when they enlist new Sailors so that no rate is overmanned. You can look into what are called "CREO" (Career Reenlistment Objectives) numbers. 1 in undermanned (or open for enlistment/advancement) 2 is properly manned and 3 is overmanned (not open and low advancement). It lists the availability for E-1 through E-4, E-5, and E-6. So for your son, take a look at the CREO listing for E-1 through E-4. The CREO numbers are usually for already enlisted, but they are also helpful and applicable to recruits. Good luck!
FYI: to all DEPpers on the Main page is a discussion entitled "How to get the absolute, very best Program the Navy can offer" posted by Crusty, a knowledgeable ole Navy Man. :) Every one of you should read it before signing any contract. Remember, that you are NOT in the Navy and under NO obligation until you raise your hand and swear that final oath before you leave!! There is always time to walk away or request a change in jobs before that moment. Sure, the Recruiter may not be happy with you, but it isn't his/her life and career DEPper, it's yours. Any good Recruiter worth their salt will work with you to get you what you want. Do your homework, research the job options, choose wisely, be patient, remain in control of the process, get everything in writing and take the time to thoroughly read and approve your contract! Oh-and take a parent along to at least one of your Recruiter meetings, and maybe to the MEPS classifier meeting too. (see FC3's comment above) Don't be embarrassed or intimidated, you have a right and Mom and Dad are really smarter than you realize! They want only the best for you. We all do. Read on...
My son was lucky enough (I guess) to get into the area he wanted after three trips to MEPS. The thing I don't understand is he is not in a particular rating. He is in AIRC program but has not designated AE, or AO or whatever! He says he won't do that until he leaves at MEPS.
No where have I seen this but he is happy with it soooooo.
My sons Are doing the buddy system, they are all set to go, and have chosen MAA.. however, only one MAA is open, so we are waiting for a second to open so they can go to the great lakes for boot.
Has anyone else seen or heard of a back up in jobs for MAA? They are getting frustrated at waiting,my youngest son wants to switch jobs just so they can get started..
I don't want either of them to settle on a job, I want to make sure they're happy with their choices.
