Hi NavyMomXXXY, my son is also on the O'kane and runs the store. Hope to hear from you again.

I was just reading and catching up and also agree that there is definitely a period of adjustment once they get assigned to a ship. My son was also depressed and missing home, but once he went underway for the first time he saw what it was all about and loved it. He can only do his job when he is at sea, so he always looks forward to that. Welcome to all the new moms, this site is wonderful.

Hi Everyone - my daughter is a LtJG on the O'Kane, so it seems like we are fairly well represented here. Hope everyone is having a good day!

Hi Ladies, don't know if anyone in the group has a sailor on the USS Dunham DDG 109 but I put a story about the christening in the threads above. Perhaps someone will have photos to add :-)

My son is n Japan. That is what he chose. I thought it would be very hard for him but he really loves it there. He misses us and his friends but he has always been good at making friends so I guess that made things easier for him even tho he was nervouse about it. He likes being at port better than underway. I think the thing he dislikes the most is their racks, he likes having room to sleep. He use to play games a lot on the computer but now he tends to work out a lot and chase the girls. He has found out that is much better than having the long distance relationship. They need to just have fun before they get to serious and he has figured that out with a little time.

My son's ship (Benfold) will be in Seal Beach this week and they are doing tours over the weekend. I'm hoping some of my family can go and see his ship!!

Susan, my son was very homesick when he first arrived at his ship. Once he met people and made some friends he was better. BUT everytime he comes home or we go out and see him he is homesick all over again. I think it takes a while. My son is only coming up on his one year anniversary from when he went to boot camp, maybe as time goes on and they make more friends it will get easier. Only time will tell.

Thank you for all your wonderful words. I knew I could find some help here. He said they are talking about going out in Jan. I told him to try to make friends and find the good in what he is doing. I also remind my self that my son was not use to working very much and enjoyed his free time. So he is not used to this and I think misses mom taking care of him.. I just pray that he adjust soon. Thanks again.

Susan, When my son started out I was also concerned as he went through a period of time in which he was very depressed and I was very concerned. Now that he has been in for 4 years, he has adjusted. He now sees the Navy as his new family. I realize this is his coping strategy. It is important that he creates friendships with other sailors. Sometimes it is easier said than done... but it is important. I have also seem that a deployment bonds the sailors together toward one common goal.
