Hi Krystal,
What squadron is your husband going in to?
We have been in the VA beach area for 6 months now, and I have to say, we love it a lot. The badness you hear about is probably from Norfolk. There are some area of Va Beach you don't want to go near, but it's not as bad as "some people say."
If you wanted apartments close to base that are nice you can try the Red Mills area. Those are gorgeous but pricey. My husband and I rent a house 5 miles away from base in a decent area.
Definitely talk to a realtor down here. If you want to PM me, please do so and I can pass along the name of our realtor.
I'm not sure about the FRG, because my husband is in a training squadron that doesn't deploy.
The weather here is nice. It's chilly, but not necessarily freezing. Today it was 50 outside (though I know that's cold to SD, it's pretty warm for January).
We really enjoy the area, the boardwalk is very nice, the beach is great (it does get crowded in the summer), there is usually something going on and Busch Gardens is only an hour away and because you're a military family you guys each get 1 free pass a year.
Hopefully I've helped, but feel free to PM me.

not sure what squadron he has not told me yet he is on deployment waiting on him to get home so we can move

we are looking into renting a house or condo but not sure about the areas can you tell if the area is not very good if you go and drive around the area??

Hi,

My husband just got his orders and its for Oceana VA. We are completely new to the Navy life as well as the whole moving process. I would love to know if you found a place already? How the area is? What is safe? Please we truly would apprciate any information or advise!!!!! THANKS!

Hi...
We are actually still in the process of moving we should be in VB n a few days we have not found a place I'm workig with a real estate agent from realestategrp.com... We are gonna have to drive around and check out the area we want to live somewhere close to base ... when are yall heading out ???
My husband will be there in three weeks as for me and our son we will be there by the beginning of May. We are wanting to live off base as well, just would love to know which areas are nice and which ones to avoid. As you know we will be home by ourselves a lot. We are stationed there for four years. Any advice would help, and I will definitely contact the real estate place you mentioned! Thank you.

My son will be moving there with his fiance this summer. He will be heading out in May to find housing. He also mentioned renting a house, so any help with neighborhoods would be helpful.

We are moving to Oceana in March also! My husband is an AO and got attached to a squadron. He is an e-2 and is supposed to graduate A-School March 15th. We have only been to that area once. His dad was stationed in Norfolk and we visited a couple of years ago while he was still there. I need suggestions on housing too!
