Karla, sorry to hear about the news, and the terrible timing of it's delivery - and this is definately a very new *change* and the first I've heard of it. However, for as much as it seems to be "mid course", Oct 1st was the start of a new fiscal year, and so that is frequently when new policies are implemented.

While getting to their ship as an E3 may mean doing up to the entire possible 180 days cranking, I can tell you from my son's experience, even getting to the ship as E4 doesn't keep that from happening.

But more importantly, I don't think your son has to be concerned with not being able to do his job when he gets to his duty station after c-school. What determines if they can work on their system is if they are "rated" (completed Aschool) and if they are NEC qualified, and completion of c-school gives them that. And there are plenty of FCs & ETs who go to the ships/duty stations as E3s and they still do their ET & FC jobs (at least until they get tagged for going to cranking).

Karla~Im so sorry to hear that. I have not hear about the change of policy. If that is the case, i would be upset as well. My hubby was also told he would be making his E-4 before he got to the fleet due to his rate and that. Hmm...I will def ask him if he has been told anything on this. In the mean time keep your spirits up and try to keep his up. I hope he does well on his test, I will be saying a prayer for you both. Sometimes I agree, its hard to understand some of this stuff

Hello Everyone! It has been a rough day for my sailor today. He was scheduled to be frocked today, went for the ceremony this morning and there was some type of paper work screw up even though it was all supposed to be done a month ago. Then while he is trying to get it all straightened out before he leaves Dahlgren next week they say things have changed. New policy says that even with time and rate they will now go by the testing schedule of everyone else so even though he is eligible to make E4 today it will not happen until next Jan. He is extremely upset and called me about 30 minutes before his C school systems final. I can't imagine how he will do on his test. I don't understand how this can change mid course, he was told going in and even in the past couple of months while getting all the paperwork together that this was when he would be eligible and now the policy changes. Now when he gets to his ship in a month he will not be able to do anything with the equipment until he is E4 and will have much longer cranking. Sometimes I just don't get it!

Yes, he is an ET also. I alos have an older son (23) who is an ET3 on the USS Momsen in Everett, WA. That is one reason Will is so excited with his orders, he will only be about an hour away from his brother!

Melinda - thank you for that information. It gets frustrating not knowing anything. Sounds like my son - he drives or used to drive people to the airport every now and again when he was on hold.

I understand on the waiting game, the more time on their hands then more time they have to get into trouble too. Which is unfortunate, but I try to talk to him every day or two to keep focused. Did you say your son was an ET also?

Jeanette, Yes he is in Great Lakes. I think it took a couple of weeks if I remember correctly for him to get verbal orders then another week before he actually got the written orders. He is scheduled for 3 C schools 2 in Norfolk, VA and one in DamNeck, VA. In June he reports to Whidbey Island, WA to work at the Tactical Support Communications center. He is very excited! Until then he is just hanging out at GL. He has driven a few people to the airport in the last couple of days. But bascially he has not been doing much of anything. I am a little worried about the length of time between A school and C school...like the summers...how much is he going to forget between now and then???

Hi ladies --- TGIF! So now that the rains have finally chilled out, it's cold enough in Atlanta for the ...furnace! Can only imagine what it's like in GL.

Wanted to welcome our newest member today...GrizzJen!

Anti M - I've always been a musician. I can play the clarinet, however for the past 5/6 yrs I've been singing, I would love to audition for a slot in the navy music program. I know it's nothing technical like FC but I'd like to serve my country, and I'd like to do it as being a musician for the Navy.

Melinda - is your son in GL? I believe my son has a couple weeks before he graduates from A school. How long before your son graduated A school did he get his orders to C school and such? What will he be doing from now until he reports to his next school? Where is his school?
Melinda Q Comment by Melinda Q on October 16, 2009 at 1:45pm
Jeanette, my son finished A school about a month ago. He has orders but he does not report to C school until Jan 17. He called this morning...he had to muster at 0700 and was released to liberty at 0720! Long workday!! Ha Ha
