In the South Pacific, many of the islands had never seen any foreigners until they were invaded by Japan. When the U.S. Navy ran the Japanese out, and set up stations on these islands, they brought a curious prosperity to these people. Gave them rations, cokes, cigarettes and such, and when a ship was sunk, supplies washed up on the shore: cargo. Cargo was sent by the gods.

I'm watching "Meet the Natives," on TV. Five guys from the Island of Tanna in the S. Pacific. They are on a peace mission to the U.S. Many years ago, they were a people at war, until a man they call "Tom Navy," came to the island and showed them how to live in peace. It was the end of WWII, and the Navy had driven the Japanese off. He taught them a bit about the U.S., and gave them food and cargo. Tom Navy told them to live in peace, and left money and a promise to come back.

They heard that America was fighting a war, and so they're looking for Tom Navy to help spread the word of peace that he gave them; if they can't find Tom Navy, they are to tell the President that peace is the most important thing.

The moment Ted Kennedy would not want to lose

My late husband, Ted Kennedy, was passionate about health-care reform. It was the cause of his life. He believed that health care for all our citizens was a fundamental right, not a privilege, and that this year the stars -- and competing interests -- were finally aligned to allow our nation to move forward with fundamental reform. He believed that health-care reform was essential to the financial stability of our nation's working families and of our economy as a whole.

The bill before Congress will finally deliver on the urgent needs of all Americans. It would make their lives better and do so much good for this country. That, in the end, must be the test of reform. That was always the test for Ted Kennedy. He's not here to urge us not to let this chance slip through our fingers. So I humbly ask his colleagues to finish the work of his life, the work of generations, to allow the vote to go forward and to pass health-care reform now. As Ted always said, when it's finally done, the people will wonder what took so long.

The first and last paragraph of her letter.

Corporate Whore Rick Berman Smacked Down by Court for Anti-Health Care

It’s nice to see the purveyors of corporate activism get their comeuppance.

A federal court ordered the latest Rick Berman front group to take down its anti-healthcare ad because of trademark violations. Berman’s group falsely claimed several doctors’ groups opposed “government health care,” and those groups weren’t too happy.

The American College of Surgeons filed a complaint in Illinois’ Northern District alleging that the Employee Freedom Action Committee — one of a host of groups run by lobbyist Rick Berman — had violated trademark law and defamed the group by including the College of Surgeons on a scrolling list headed “Doctors Against the Plan.”

“Illusions are like mistresses. We can have many of them without tying ourselves down to responsibility. But truth insists on marriage. Once a person embraces truth, he is in its ruthless, but gentle, grasp.”

As to where the GOP gets its statistics? They don't need to get 'em from anywhere, just pull 'em out of a dark and stinky place. If you tell a lie often enough and loud enough, it becomes the truth. I believe there is some historic figure, I won't name, who said that. It's true, no matter what the source.

Steve, don't get me going on Tiger Woods. This whole thing should never have been played out on national television. The Today Show should be ashamed of themselves for showcasing these blonde airheads every morning like they did. The bottom line is Tiger will go away for a bit, will come back for the Masters in April and blow everyone away there.

McConnell...Ugh...where's that shoe thrower when you need him!

I think we need to start focusing on what IS in it instead of what is not, at the moment, in it. Baby steps. start someplace! Social Security had to be built along the way as well.

Just saw McConnell on TV proclaiming that "the vast majority of the American people are against this bill." I'm just wondering where he got that piece of nonsense. Probably the same place the GOP gets everything these days, from Faux News.

Tiger Woods is the latest Missing White Girl. Instead of covering meaningful news, the networks and (sadly) the newspapers, cover pap. Usually a missing white girl, even when there are many missing women and men of color. Missing white girls get the coverage. And it's totally meaningless.

Instead of covering those who are being obstructionist in congress (the obstructionist side could even be bragging about it) and allowing an educated public to make informed decisions, and petition their legislators, they make it as difficult as possible to get that information.

We're being fed bread and circuses.
