My biggest concern is that my daughter is going to BC September 9 and then hopefully she will be off to a successful NAVY career. But what about her safety as a woman in the Navy? I think the opportunities are amazing and I am very proud of the choice she has made.

Cathy,
She has made an amazing choice. Not only is she one of the few who made the choice to join the Navy, but was actually able to join! The Navy can now be picky as far as who they let come in, and it is easier to get into college than it is to get in the military. And being a former recruiter, it is more difficult for a woman to get into the Navy than a man due to the lack of available jobs that are offered aboard a ship. The Navy has a zero tolerance policy as far as sexual harassment & discrimination. Any case of any sexual harassment will be dealt with right away. The Navy is trying to down size, and they are looking for any reason to kick people out, so I feel as though the quality of people in the Navy has gone up. I haven't seen an unsafe work condition for a woman since I have been in since 1999. I know a policy can only go so far, but as long as she keeps her head on straight and hangs out with the right people, she will be fine.

I am scared that my son will end up in Iraq. My husband was in VietNam and it was the longest and scariest year or my life, but he was in the AirForce. I think the Army & Marines are more apt to be in the danger zones. Of couse, here at home you never know with all of the gang violence and things bad happening right here in the USA, that they aren't safer in the Navy. It's a proud service to be part of and I know that God will take care of my son.....but I'm still scared
