Group for Mom's of Gunners Mates in A School or on Duty

Members: 88

I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Hello Ladies, I have a son who had his PIR on 10/16/09. He is currently on hold for A school at GL. I was hoping to here from him today to see if he got any news of when he would be starting.

Are Navy Gunners Mates currently being deployed to aid combat troops in iraq and afghanistan? What is their average time spent on the ground? Would a GM fresh out of bootcamp and A school be deployed to iraq or afghanistan?

Beth, my son Justin PIR'ed on 10/31/08.he was on hold to start A-school but not more than a few weeks. he did have some hold time between the different sections of schooling, usually not too long.He did make it home for Christmas as the base was on stand down. don't know if they have changed that at all but I have heard there were some changes in the schooling right after h finished. He finished his schooling June 09 and was on hold until September-longest time for him on hold.he is training with the riverines. Went from GL's to Mississippi to start his training and was only there for 26 days and is now in Virginia where he will be stationed. So don't give up hope on the Christmas thing, maybe they still go on stand down and he might get a chance.Best of luck to you and your family.

Thanks Barb. I'm usually okay with it all, and don't whine much...we're actually very thankful that he was able to get in the Navy and get orders for San Diego. It was our little guy's 4th birthday this week, and he was told not to make holiday plans in the same week... and we were SO hoping to bring him home for Christmas. We'll just keep strong and hope that it all works out in the end.

Geez Beth, that is awful for you and the boys. My son left for boot camp on 7/18/08 and arrived at his first duty station about a month ago, But he did go to San Diego for C school too. He was supposed to be assigned to the USS Port Royal, but his orders were changed to the USS Hopper. He is now somewhere in the Middle east and wont be back until sometime in Feb or March. It has to be so much harder for you, being a Mom of small children. My thoughts are with you all and hope you get to see him soon

It's really a crapshoot with the hold issue. My hubby left for boot camp 11/19/08, has been on weeks and months of hold between classes, and it's now been over 5 weeks since he graduated from his A School, but his orders still have not posted. They have told him he's not allowed to make any plans for Thanksgiving or Christmas currently because it is unknown when he will be leaving. So, I can't buy plane tickets, and the closer we get, the more expensive they get. Not to mention that he's sitting around there, frustrated that he is done with training and has absolutely nothing to do...just waiting for the orders to post. Now we're just praying that he gets home before the baby gets here in March, but I don't think either of us has much hope right now. It's just all unknown at this point, and there's nothing anyone can do about it apparently.

Tyler PIR'd on 08-07-09. 18 days hold, INDOC, 10 days hold, SCC, 6 days hold, ATT, 10 days hold, A-school. He hasn't too much hold at all.

JoAnn,Riverines are a special team. They go down rivers on smaller boats, assist the marines. there is a riverine group on NFM'S if you would like to join it. They go through a lot of rigorous training before deploying anywhere. My son is in Mississippi right now training for riverine squadron 2,and will be leaving there Friday to go to Virginia where he will be stationed.Even tho he is statione there he will be going to other bases for parts of his training.
