Group for Mom's of Gunners Mates in A School or on Duty

Members: 89

I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Anyone know of any "Adopt a Sailor" programs in GL? We can't bring the hubby home for Thanksgiving this year, and I hate to think that he'll be spending the day on base.

thanks connie,

i know that they are different units, just didn't know if they were all the same type of unit, if that makes any sense. Apparantly they are looking for riverenes right now it sounds. My son has mentioned them too, i know that the riverenes patrol the river/waterways, but didn't know if they transport seals like SWCC does. '
thanks for the info!

the riverines and SWCC are two different units. SWCC is special ops and works with the navy seals. The Riverines are called "brown water navy" and they patrol the rivers in small water crafts. My son is a gunners mate in Riverines and was thinking about trying to join SWCC You can find out some more information by goggling SWCC(Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewman) and Riverines.

ladies,

does any one know whether SWCC is the same as the riverenes or is it like a subcatagory.

Ladies,Just wanted to give you a heads up about sending electronics. when my son was there, there were things that were stolen including at one time a laptop.Tell them to keep their things locked up at all times when not using them.when something is stolen and no one confesses the whole ship pays for it-they lose some of their privileges.kind of sad but it happens.

Tina,

Marc is rooming with 3 other boys. The first week Marc was there I sent his phone and laptop. Tuesday I sent out his clothes and he got those today. That is what Marc keeps saying months, last week he said he had heard he could be on hold his whole time. I find that one hard to believe, but I guess stranger things have happened lol. Thanks for letting me know what Alex told you.

Kim,-- I just got off the phone with Alex. He said that it could take weeks or even months before he starts his A school. He has moved over to another ship. He is living with 4 other guys now. We are sending his laptop and other electronics next week.

Juneball - GMs can be assigned to a very wide variety of different types of duty. If they're assigned to a (my words) "big gray ship", they will home port where their ship is and deploy with the battle group or unit of ships their ship is assigned to and be very unlikely to be on the ground. There are, however, many commands they can be assigned to that don't involve large vessels. Check this link: http://www.necc.navy.mil/. Navy Expeditionary Combat Command is an umbrella command that includes SeaBees (construction battalions), EOD, MSRON (maritime expeditionary security forces...providing security along unsecured coastlines, oil platforms, escorting large ships while they're close to shore and in foreign harbors (remember the USS Cole incident)...they have the Divers and other groups too. Gunners mates can be assigned to many of these teams. My son is a GM on a MSRON boat team on small patrol boats. It's very interesting work, very different from large ships. Many of these units do deploy to Kuwait and the Persian Gulf area.
