Hi Ladies!  I am also planning to go to Groton over the 4th of July weekend...I did alot of checking around on the rooms before booking my room at the Ramada Inn...the prices seem to be higher because it is a holiday weekend.  My son graduated BESS on 6/3, and we were unable to attend because of some priorities here at home.  His original graduation date was 6/10, and they bumped it up a week because they got done faster.  They were actually done a week sooner than graduation, and had liberty and duties that week.  I also learned that if your grade fell below a certain average, they require them to attend "Night Study"....@BECKIE....have you heard him mention if he was having to attend night study?  Also, I was recommended a book called Flotsam & Jetsam, by Harry McKinney, Rear Adm, USN ret.  The book tells stories of his 40 yr career in the Navy...he was a Submariner....I finally purchased it, and I cant put it down.  You might want to check it out.  I am gonna read it and pass on to my Sailor, there is a picture of the "escape trainer" in the book, and it talks alot about New London

Cheri...just curious...what class is your son in (graduation date??).
Comment by Rose7..Norfolk on June 15, 2011 at 9:22pm
Beckie....I agree with Cheri, don't worry too much.  Your feeling could be right but also can be that he didn't pass a test.  They have to pass everything if not they hold them back.  So my opinion is try to find out and encourage him may be he need to study a little harder.  Good luck!!

I hope that didn't sound bad.  That is just what I would have said about my son

Beckie  I wouldn't worry too much.  I do know that one kid in my son's BESS class was sent back through the entire BESS because he got a tattoo but it sounds like your son is just being pushed back for part of it.  It may have been his grade on his last test.  All of the guys are pretty smart kids otherwise they would not have scored high enough on the ASVAB.  Maybe he just needed a kick in the pants.

@Defiance my son has had his girlfriend at the time, stay on base, he has to arrange that, but my son's brother and I have stayed at Best Western, #360 on rt#12 it is 3 minutes from the base, they have a restauant on site, with sauna, pool, and weight rm.

not an eligant place, but is not bad it cost a little bit more then you staying on base

I'm visiting my son over July 4th.  I hear there is a carnival & fireworks!  I am going to Mystic & also Ocean Beach Park in New London.  Water slides & the ocean!  Groton is a great place.
Comment by Cheri (L.A. FT Mom) on June 15, 2011 at 9:32am

I liked Mystic too.  I wanted to do a lot more site seeing while I was there but my son just wanted to relax like watching movies in the room.  Which reminds me.  A lot of people want to stay on base but if you do your sailor will never be able to fully relax because they are still on the base.

I made another reservation to visit my son in August but I am hoping my son will get an opportunity to fly home after TCHNO and before A-School.
