After you get married- you won't count as a dependent until you are married. :)

What SubWife2011 said. :) Your husband needs to do all the paperwork to enroll you in DEERS. My husband did all the paperwork in bootcamp so I'm not sure where he would need to go to do that...but his chain of command should be able to tell him.

Your BAH is determined by the ZIP code in which you live and your husband's rank. If you live in civilian housing, you just get the full BAH amount in your paycheck and you decide what to do with it (so if your rent and utilities total less than the BAH amount, you get the leftovers). If you live in base housing (in this case it's privatized and managed by Balfour Beatty) you would either not receive BAH at all in exchange for housing and utilities (pretty sure this is the case on some other bases) OR you will see it in your paycheck and have payment arranged directly to your housing community. Here, you get BAH in your paycheck and have an allotment (like a direct deposit OUT of your paycheck, arranged between BB and DFAS with your permission) taken out directly to BB. Housing here is nice, I like it, and seems like a pretty good deal between rent and all utilities except for internet and phone.

DEERS is the system that you and your son need to be enrolled in in order for you to receive Medical Insurance (Tricare) and your military ID.  BAH is your housing allowance.  From my understanding since Balfour Beatty is in charge of base housing there, you must pay them all of your BAH in order to live on base.  This covers all of your utilities and rent.

We are hoping to move up there in July after my husband graduates BESS.  I'm pretty positive that we are going to be living in base housing too.

Hi everyone:) Just got back from Groton yesterday afternoon and I must say I love it there! So much like home! We got married on Friday and had so much fun all weekend.
Were going to start looking into getting my son and I moved up there after BESS, so any info on the housing would be great! I do know he needs to get everything going himself. I'm trying so hard to understand the BAH and he mentioned deers or something like that. So anybody with knowledge of this care to help explain to me? :)Also would love to meet some new friends!

Thank you ladies for all of the information.  My SR is graduating with Janh's SR on 05/26 and is also going to Groton.  I'm sure I will be asking a lot of questions too but I also read alot of people's posts so maybe I won't have to ask that many after all.  Thank you for all being so welcoming and kind to us newbies (again)!  Just when I got used to knowing enough to start answering questions about boot camp I'm going to be thrown into the world of BESS!

Also ---your sons will be giving you two addresses. One will be a PO box and the other is for receiving items via UPS/FEDEX/DHL. This may seem confusing at first, but the best thing to do is to use the PO address for everything. If you order them any items from the internet, they will probably be shipped thru the UPS/FEDEX, so it will require the other address. Sometimes the UPS/FEDEX will say it is not a valid address, but assure them that it is. I have been shipping everything thru my PO to their PO and have never had a problem. Although...its not always cheap..lol!

Anything you send to your son saves them money, as they will not have to buy it at the NEX/Commissary. I sent my son shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc..nail clippers, advil, books, playing cards...anything he wanted. they still have limited room, so try not to go overboard. Its hard because we want them to be comfortable and we still want to make sure they have everything they need/want (i dont think that will ever end.lol), I have to keep telling myself that hes a man now, and earning his own money..lol

When they first arrive, they are given a white liberty card. this allows them to leave the base in uniform and be back at curfew (just like PIR). After a few weeks, they will receive a yellow liberty card. This allows them to leave the base, in regular clothes, and be back by midnight. After a few more weeks they will receive a blue liberty card. This will allow them to leave the base, in regular clothes, and (if they want) they will not need to return to the base until the next morning for scheduled classes/duties. Blue card also allows them to stay off of base for the entire weekend (day and night).
