It io s so nice to meet all of you :) Thanks for all the good info! We have decided to go to San Antonio to see Josh next weekend. I am so excited!! I would love to go to Guam but I am not a fan of flying! Kathy I am in Colorado, how long did it take you to get there? SO what do we do for Christmas boxes? From what I have read it costs alot to ship to Guam and it takes a long time. Gift cards??

Teresa, my son was told he will be there for 2 years. He finishes MA school right before Thanksgiving and we're hoping he gets to come home on leave before heading for Guam!

Hi Teresa: My daughter was there for three years, and really did like it, it is very slow pace and now she is in Washington DC where is a rat race...She had a very nice apt but it was on like the 5th floor but had a distance view of the ocean. Start saving it may be your next vacation. We did go, however we waited until right before she left, big mistake, it was really nice and if we had gone early in the assignment I may have gone back. I didn't look to see where you are from but it is a very long flight, but well worth it. Best of luck to you and your son. There are some pictures on my page from Guam.

Wow! Looks like I have hooked up with the right group :) I agree it is a long way away but I am OK with Guam!! The bad thing is he is shipping out the day after he graduates A school... How long do the tours usually run? This is "sea duty" isn't it? I am assuming that he will be there for at least a year. He doesn't seem to know that yet... Not sure why, The "Navy" way I guess - LOL!

Hi Teresa! My son is also heading to Guam in December! He's pretty excited about it. Seems pretty far away but I guess it could be lots worse :-)

Hi Teresa! My DF loves it there. It took a while to get used to the heat. His living quarters are nice. And there is a cafe called "Single Sailors" where he can go to connect to the internet, and enjoy media and games until he gets settled with his own computer or laptop if he will have one. DF bought a bike when he first got there to get around to the store and work. Sometimes fellow sailors would even give him a ride. And he recently bought a used car there. When we marry he will have to extend for a year and he says "why wouldn't we? I LOVE it here!" I only hope I love it as much! :)

My son has been there over three years. He is getting toward the end of his time in the Navy and will be coming home August 2010. He has adjusted well since he was raised on the Texas Gulf Coast and loves being surrounded by water. Since Guam is a small island and can be monotinous your son will need a hobby to occupy his time when he isn't working. I'm sure he will make many friends when he arrives and he must be willing to ask questions. Good luck to you and your son.

Teresa-My son has been in Guam for a year and has adjusted well. It's a long way from home but it's safe. It's a tropical island and who hasn't thought of going to a tropical island well enough getting paid to do it? haha Your son will love it!

Hi Becky, my daughter did the same training in Mississippi and then headed to Guam. I had a lot of contact while she was there so hopefully you will hear from him often!
