I know Ashley is on shore duty, Aaron (not Daniel) is on shore duty as well. He is a Petty Officer 2nd class, so I think he is an E5?

Scott is on shore duty also. But because of his job he usually isn't on the ship. He is a PR.

What is a PR? Where is he in HI?

What does AME stand for? Where is he on the island? My son is in Pearl City as an SK, he is a Petty Officer 2nd class. He has also been all over the world (in the south Pacific) when he was on the Shiloh. although, when he got used to it he enjoyed Japan, but he never cared for being on a ship, he just loves shore duty, and loves HI! I assume your son lives off the base?

Hi Todd, My son is an SK at Pearl City, is Ford Island anywhere near there? My son seems to be in a small building, with a small number of sailors. Are there any bigger bases nearby? Is there Navy PX type facility in Pearl City? How close is Pearl City to the Arizona memorial? How long have you been on Oahu? My son has been there since June, and loves it. Is there any way he could stay there after his 3 year orders expire? He is a Petty Officer 2nd Class, and renlisted this past May. Lynda By the way, what is ATG?

Some of Aaron's buddys work at the Arizona Memorial. John said Ford Island is right there at Pearl Harbor. His team was there. I know you can ask to have your stay extended after your 4 years and since Hawaii is considered overseas you have a good chance of staying. Some of Aaron's higher ups of been there for 14 years. When John was there last you had to take a boat to Ford but they have a bridge now.
Hi Todd - my son is in the TP unit. Lives on Battleship drive. Likes it so far -he's been there since July.

Sue, I just noticed that you posted this. Most of Ashley's friends work at the Arizona memorial. They must know mutual friends since there's not that many that work over there.

Ford Island is across a 1/4 mile bridge that starts in pearl harbor. ford island base is actually considered pearl harbor. Pearl harbor is a VERY big base and connected to it is Hickam Air Force Base which is also pretty big. The Navy NEX is the PX/BX out here and it is very big, and must be well utilized to deal with high island prices. the arizona memorial is attatched to the pearl harbor base as well. The battelship USS missouri is also moored at ford island and a great attraction if you have never been on a battleship. my family and i have been here for over one year now and we like it very much as well. Yes, his chances of staying past his 3 years is very good. as long as when it is time for him to transfer back to a ship there is a opening available. but the navy would like to keep him here because it costs the navy less to keep him here than to ship him off island. ATG is Aloat Training Group, what we do is assess the ships in their drills before deploying. they must meet our minimum scores on all areas (firefighting, anti-terrorism, engineering, supply administration etc) beofre they deploy and are on their own without the help of the U.S. we watch them perform and grade them like a report card. are you planning a visit. you now have the best reason to visit hawaii, and a cheap one at that!!

My son Jeff, is stationed @ Kaneohe Bay for shore duty. He is with the Easyrider LAMP squadron and works on helicopters. He got stationed there after attending C school @ North Island ( which is where my husband works and is in San Diego) We live in a city outside of San Diego- so it was like having him home. He likes it well enough- there is a lot of rain (guess that's why it is greener than here:). He has his truck so he can sight see, drive over to Pearl Harbor w/ his friends etc. Right now he is working nights. I think he is there for awhile.
