Beth --thank you! Brandon is really good with money too. Time will tell what happens :)

When Garrett first went to Japan the gas prices were sky high. A round trip ticket from here in FL was almost $1800! Now, Garrett flew round trip w/ a longer lay over in the Midwest to see his Grandparents and paid less than $1000. He was told (after he bought his tickets) that certain airlines were offering 50% off flights from Japan. The Navy didn't release the information immediately to them because they were checking it out to make sure it wasn't some kind of a scam. It may have helped kids coming home for leave for Christmas or New Year's. I talked to someone who's been there for almost their whole 3 year commitment, she only flew home one time. I guess it depends on how much the kids can save towards travel. I'm lucky, Garrett is a good money man. He's already planning on trying to come home again in a year.

Beth--It is an awesome opportunity, he said "mom I told you I want to travel", I just honestly never knew it was a 3.5 year deployment :( i support him in whatever he does. Who knows what will even be available when the time comes. I am so proud of him, and would never hold him back. How much do you think the flights back home are??

Welcome Leslie! Japan is great. The tours include all kinds of exotic ports. They prepare the kids well for life in Japan - BUT.... it's a long term commitment. They pay for their own travel back to the U.S. when on leave. Of course, they could just stop in really cool places like Tahiti or New Zealand...

New to this group, just want to introduce myself, My name is Leslie, my son is in GL waiting for A school to class up. He is AECF. I live in Florida, West Palm Beach, horse show season is upon us, this is a wonderful place to live when you're into horses . We have 2 horses, my daughter rides, I used to. I am originally from Cali.

CCR- The longer hugs, yes! I will never forget the hug at PIR, he buried his face in my neck, and it melted me :)

Beth- My son wants Japan---3.5 years??? Oh my gosh, I will go crazy!

Beth, YES! I am obsessed with having a phone with me. When I leave my desk at work, I have my cell in my pocket. At home it's the same way and I sleep with them by my pillow. I'll never forget in boot camp when I missed the call when it finally came. He called the house, my work and my cell and couldn't reach anyone. I was sitting in the lunch room reading a book with no phone and no way to call him back. Part of the message was some blood test he was failing and he was pretty shaken so you can imagine what that did to me!
You are right, a few months does not compare to pds overseas. He's already about 1/2 way through the deployment. Being stationed in Hawaii makes it almost the same for us as far as not being able to see him often but at least when he's there I talk to him regularly. I am thankful for the email system on the ships though...as often as it's down, it would still be much worse without it =).

Still cold here - steamy sounds wonderful right now!

Deneen are you like me? When you're expecting a call, you're on pins and needles. I find that I rearrange my daily life just to ensure that I can catch the call. Sorry it's been so long since you saw him. Not to minimize the trials other military families go through, but a deployment overseas for 7 months seems like a piece of cake as compared to the assignment to Japan for 3.5 years that our sailor has!

Our weather warmed up! Now it's almost steamy enough during the day to turn the AC back on!

Beth, I know what you mean. When time is limited it becomes even more precious. What a great time of year to have him home with you. Blake should be in port and able to call in the next few days...can't wait to hear his voice. It will be a year on Jan 7 since I've seen him.
We are having a crazy cold spell in Oregon right now! It was 13 degrees this morning...very unusual here! Packing water to the animals...not fun. I worry about colic from insufficient water when it's cold like this.
CCR, on my screen, upper right under the First Time Here? heading, there is a section on videos. Not sure if it would help you.

Beth, you are making me tear up. My son still will not kiss me, but now he understands why my hugs are longer and tighter. "Mom, someone will see" Balderdash!

I wish I could figure out how to get a video on here. I made a video of my son's PIR, but that was April of 08 and I've slept since then. Mine are going crazy frolicking and jumping and chasing each other as the snow is coming down. I captured it, so lovely to see them play. They didn't know what to make of it, but it was 27 the next morning. That hardly ever happens.
