So, you ladies wondering about what happens AFTER the IA billet is up, when the guys come towards the end of their enlistment (or current orders), there is a 9 month window that opens up when they have the chance to be in communication with their command career counselor and detailer, to work on finding their next set of orders. I believe I remember it taking my own DH a couple of enlistments to really figure this all out, but even now, out in the desert, he has pinned-down his GSA CCC, so he can negotiate his next set of orders, since now that he knows better, he would never leave it up to chance. The guys have to get ahold of their CCC and detailer early on, and let them know what their next intentions are, for their best chance at getting what they really want.

Hahah, I'm still learning too since every time the guys move, you have to learn it all over again! I don't know anything about how IA is "supposed to help with promotion," it sounds like maybe it can count as PNA points on the rate exams from what Karen said? Just like medals and awards do, but, my hubby went IA because he wanted to be in the desert, not a ship again, and that's all he cared about, so is happy as a clam (or, er, camel?).

It is. Service records record everything the guys have done, and when they are IA they have a ton of opportunities to train and learn things they never get to on a ship.
Hi ladies, I'm Navy wife, and have been for going-on 10 years. My DH is on his first IA orders right now in Iraq, and has picked-up the EXW qual (Expeditionary warfare) since getting there, and is petitioning to also be allowed to get his FMF (field medic) qual while out there too. This consists of requesting permission to get the qual/ getting the study guides to learn the info/ taking written tests/ and going to a board where they are questioned insistently for hours / before obtaining the qualification. However, many sailors can go through entire enlistments and just plain NOT get their quals; it's up to them.
For my DH, these new ones are being added to his SW (surface warfare) qual he obtained while stationed on a ship, and his AW(air warfare) qual, he obtained while being stationed at an air squadron.
Sorry for the strong intro, lol... there's so much to all this Navy stuff! =)

that doesn't seem right does it? The fact he went IA, no matter the length there should be the only thing important to his file.

well hope he is gone the entire 12 months. Since my sailor got brought back at only 9 of 12 months all his time and points toward promotions didn't count. He had to stay the entire 12 months. For his career, it was like it never even happened.
Best,
karen

THanks for the info ladies!!! Wondering about the length because of the possiblility he'd be gone next winter, guess that depends on when training is finished and all.
I really appreciate the info from a mom's point of view, guess i'll have to wait till he actually signs to know what exactly will happen with him, i figured it would be close to a year.

My son got back from Afghan,, last month. 9 months into a 12 month tour. The Navy pulled his group out on short notice and sent them back home. He found a real nice billet on the East coast doing shore duty. It was time for shore duty sicne Afghan. is considered 'sea duty" for the IA's. He's closer to us on the east Coast so we are happy about that.
Merry Christmas,
Karen

Kelly,
My son is there for 9 months and as far as I know he will be away from his command for approx 12 months. If all goes well, he will be home on leave within the next month. They had asked for volunteers on the ship and he volunteered. He had told me he wanted to try something different and he had heard that you can move up in rank faster if you volunteer for IA.

I have heard of sailors having a choice of east or west, but my son's base was set when he went in. He was guaranteed Cali and that is his command. I really have no idea how it would work in your son's situation, but I'm sure there is a mother on here who's child was in a similar situation.

hi lisa!

it's hard to know how things go. i'd think that they would go back to original command. my son was planning on signing as IA before he even completed school so not sure how that would work, he said that he would get his choice of coasts? when he went to fleet, before he went IA.
he was told that they are in need of GM's right now for IA, not sure whether he was approached or he asked about it.
how long is/was your son's tour as an IA?
