Anti M ----> Now I want a TERIYAKI BURGER when we visit Japan next summer!

Anti M: That is too funny - it a wide open job though looking for the right person - I could make a fortune if only I were bi-lingual.

I used to live around the corner from a 24 hour MOS burger. Nothing beats a teriyaki burger at three a.m. after a night of beer and games with friends. They're not beef, soy I think. MOS stands for Mountain Ocean Sky. The fries are great.

You have experienced "Engrish", MoND. There are computer programs which take concepts, then fit English words to the idea. It doesn't always turn out. "Where am I? This must be dream.I fly" or "Obscene art projects" or "Let's sports naked all day long!" or "Brain Shower Gum".

T-Lynn can you find out from your son exactly where the castle and samurai's house is located? That sounds like something my son would love to visit. Thanks.

Actually - I did not have a Sasebo Burger - I did get one as a charm but that's about it. I just couldn't bring myself to eat one. They sell them in the train station and several other places I've seen. In the train station the kiosk is called "Log Kit" - what makes it famous is the "egg" they put on the burger - not really for me. We did go to MWR to get brochures in English - but we're a military family who lived in Germany in a small village with 15 homes and us the only Americans - so my husband likes to try things on his own - so we decided where we wanted to go using the brochures and then headed right for the train station on our own. Believe it or not, 85% of most signs, directions, etc., are in English, so it is really easy to get around, even the instructions for buying tickets at the train station has an "english" button. My husband learned a few simple words before we travelled - like, do you speak english??? And everywhere we went - using a combination of hand signs and words we were able to make it around safely. The Japanese people have made being courteous an art form. We ate at Ra Ra Ramen, the Steak Salon, Moss Burger, and a few other off the wall places, and of course we tried the pizza and beer (beer can be purchased from vending machines) - even ate at a Mexican Restaurant in Japan! Most restaurants hold 4-8 people - really different. Getting lost wasn't really an issue cuz you get most everywhere by train (and subway) and then the taxi from there. Sasebo is a lot larger than I expected. Word of caution - be careful what you buy in the states with Japanese writing - unless you are sure of what it says - I noticed that none of their t-shirts in English make sense, they are mostly random English words place on a shirt - here's a funny one: Basements - pink and blue, dogs. Just random words it - too funny!

Question Navy Dad - wondering, just are your two favorite things in Japan? I have a feeling - your son and the Sasebo Burger. Could I be right? By teh way - my son has had one of those burgers and he said it is to die for.

Hey Mom of a Navy Daughter - While you were eating at all those places in Sasebo did you have their famous SASEBO BURGER?

Sasebo burgers are handmade burgers being served in Japan, they cost 500 yen each and they have a tradition going back more than 50 years. To enjoy them, you will have to travel a bit, though. Their home is Sasebo, a small town with a big American Navy base on the western coast of Kyushu, about an hour and a half by train southwest of Fukuoka and 88 minutes from Nagasaki.

I love Mongolian BBQ, most of the base clubs have it once a week.

The MWR tours are very good, an easy way to go see some sights without getting lost. We would go on a few, then know how to get around on our own if we wanted to go back.

Good to know the Lodge doesn't bump anymore.

While in Sasebo our daughter worked most days but was able to pay someone and do a duty-swap on the weekends - she is saving her leave to come home in January for her wedding. We toured her boat (Harper's Ferry) and during the days we shopped at the Ginza (mall) Sasebo, took the train to Nagasaki and visited the museum, ground zero and the peace park, we also visited china town in Fukuoka and the Sasebo Maritime museum. We took the train to Huis Ten Bosch a reproduction of a dutch town, and shopped and ate there. During the evenings with our daughter we visited her favorite eating spots and shopping spots in town. We also made the most use out of activities on base as well. We did a huge champagne brunch at the Harbor View Club, ate at Chili's and Galaxy's - also rented movies and shopped at the Nex. We even went to a Mongolian BBQ at the club on Thursday evening, and took walks every night as the days are soo hot. The most expensive item are taxi rides surprisingly enough - although the cost of living is pretty high in Japan as well, even though the Yen/Dollar exchange rate is decent, not great.
I'll answer any questions - just shoot them my way. We also got a spot on the local AFN news channel when the boat docked - that was fun - not sure how to share the link but we found it on YouTube (maybe if you search Harper's Ferry home coming).
