Here's what a train map looks like. Yokosuka is at the bottom, on the Sobu line. Atsugi is on the Sagami line. The Keikyu line is a different company and isn't on that map.

Here is the Navy handout for riding the trains, with a basic map of the stops:

Riding the trains

It really isn't as hard as it looks.

I saw that festival on the travel channel or maybe it was the history channle - very interesting.

I was always working when the Horseback archery was going on (I know, in 12 years, what were the odds?) and I always wanted to go... Nov. 22nd if your sailor has the time, I strongly suggest going. Unique!

One suggestion before a visit, have your sailor go pick up a train map which is printed in Romanji (English characters). Have them circle the train station(s) in Yokosuka (or Atsugi) and then mail the map to you. Many Japanese speak English, but even those who do not are usually willing to help you find your way if you can point at a map and say please!

There is more than one train line going to Yokosuka. As Kat says, the JR line has different cars, and you can pay more and have a little more room. You will end up at Yokosuka station, which is not downtown, but still a short cab ride (or long walk). Depart from Tokyo station.

The Keikyu line is faster and stops at Yokosuka-Chuo (downtown Yokosuka), but you have to watch and make sure you're on the express car (green sign on the train cars). There are overhead racks, but not worth the hassle to get things up there. These can get very, very crowded. Depart from Shinagawa station.

Lynda the trains have different cars and you can pay a little more and ride in the car with overhead space for luggage.

Stacy...my son works in the Atsugi health center as an Optometry Tech. There are only two of them in that office.

Good morning everyone. 12 more days and I'll be on a plane headed for Japan. I am so anxious to see my baby girl. She has been gone for 6 months and it seems like eternity. We e-mail and she calls as often as she can but I so miss her beautiful smile and getting those hugs. I don't know if I will be able to leave Japan when it comes time. Oh well don't go there yet.

Anita 647, please share the places you visit and sites you see while you are there. Also how are you getting around and are you having trouble with getting your luggage from place to place. I keep hearing there is not much room on the trains for luggage. We are going to take a shuttle bus from the airport to our first hotel, but then we have to get to Yokosuka and then later on back to the airport. I'm getting a little nervous.

Have a great day everyone. Happy Veterans Day to all our Veterans. Thank you and God Bless You.

Enjoy Anita. I agree that they are the best foreign hosts.
