There are several currency exchange places in Narita airport:

Phone the airport. Most have a foreign exchange booth. I doubt his phone will work in Japan.

Sandy, his US cell phone may not be compatible with the Japanese systems at all. He may have to switch phones, carriers, whatever. The current contract can probably be waived if need be.

Sandy, ask to go with your son through security. They usually let one person go but if you ask nice they should let your whole family go with him. Make sure he has some yen for emergencies. Google "Navy Lodge" (I think it's $16.00 a night). Sometimes they are full, you can only book a room 2 months in advance. My son sent me his address and ship email when he got there.

He needs a hair cut ? Sounds like my son - I think he and your son have gotten so use that "almost no hair look" . If you son thinks he looks like a hippie - I must look like a mop. I'm trying to grow my hair out some and I am at the stage of - just over the tips of my ears - and just below the eye brows, but enought to bother my eyes - look. And styling it - no way - it has it's own mind. Carol, what a handsome young man. And he is on a hike? My Alex would love to go hiking - cave exploring - scuba diving., etc. Just wish he had the chance to do so. It seems on his base those types of tours are not offered very much and when they are - not enough people sign up. Good luck looking up thsoe pictures of the First Lady and I am so waiting to hear your opinion. I think Jasmine is a good name too. TLynn

Ok - now I have to change the subject a little. Any one who also watched this memorial - please answer the questions:
As I was watching the President and the First Lady give their final respects to each fallen solider - the First Lady had a wonderful profile. I say the baby is due in April. And it's a girl. Anyone else have an ideas of when and what sex ? TLynn

$170 ! Must be line with gold. Just finished watching the memorial at
Ft. Hood. My eys are a little swollen. Several times I cried. Espeically when a family member kissed a their lost one's picture and when a fellow wounded soldier would honor his comrade with a salute. One wounded soldier was having trouble walking with his cruches, but would not give in and paid honor. TLynn

This time last year I was at Yokuska airforce base on business. The heat for the entire base got turned on when the Commander decided. DFAS Japan took up two buildings on base and they had to wait. It was only really cold at night. They gave us extra blankets at the lodge.

Caroline,
Just what type of weather will be like at her base?. She might need to pack several pairs of LONG JOHNS- white in color. Anti M knows a good brand to get too - made out of silk and lighter weight. Also, winter coats and gloves - I was infomrned by my sailor, one cannot wear their military winter coat with civilian clothing. And Moms and Dads - isn't there a reugulation on the color of any back packs or case for lap tops ? I think the colors are only black or very dark blue/. talk later - TLynn

Lynda, you couldn't ask for a safer, friendlier place to get lost in than Japan. I'm more apprehensive about most of the big cities in the US than I am about anywhere in Japan! Not that they don't have crime, they just don't have as much of it.

The good thing about having the train maps beforehand is that initial panic when you see the tangled web is over before you actually have to find your ticket, platform and train!
