Hello everyone, I'm very new here but my son ships tomorrow!  I took him to the recruiting station today and he was taken to another city for MEPS where my younger son and I will go tomorrow to see him sworn in and then he will fly out to Great Lakes.  He is my eldest son, so this is all new to me.  We are nervous but excited and extremely proud of him, but already missing him like crazy.

Hi DocMom,

My son left for BootCamp om March 1 2016. He is in Yokosuka, Japan now,  It sure is difficult at first.  We  were so happy when we received the 30 second call from him that he arrived safely at Great Lakes.  We are fortunate that we live in Chicago and Great Lakes is less than an hour away.  Yet it is SO FAR when you are waiting to hear how he is doing. The box of his civilian clothing arrived at the house within a week or two. The next call was at the 3 week point. I was looking at every site I could find that related to Boot Camp. We were counting down the 8 long weeks to PIR.  The letters from him were anticipated and we wrote to him a lot.  PIR was exciting and so wonderful to reunite with our boy.  A School followed at Great Lakes and again we were close enough to get in a few visits. He has been in Japan now since August.  We are very proud of our son.  We do miss him terribly.  We DID get an i-pad so we can facetime.  It is a good investment and worth it to be able to see and talk. It DOES get easier.  Good luck to you and your son.

Thanks so much Wheatonpup.  It's nice to hear from the other side of this...although Japan seems like a world away!  Thanks for the ipad tip.  I will have to look into doing that to make things easier.

The ipad seemed so much easier than skype to me.  I put a distinctive ring on it for my son so i know it is him calling!  He calls from the McDonalds in Japan because they have WIFI there. It is It is 7am in Chicago when he calls and 10pm in Yokosuka.  Hang in there!

I will be doing the same thing in a few more weeks.  This site has been an amazing research tool.  Everyone is so full of information and sensitivity to what is about to happen.  I have been reading so much of the pages offered here. We are all thinking of you and your son and this incredible journey.

Thank you CeCe.  My younger son and I went to watch him complete the swearing in ceremony today before he had to go to the airport, so at least we got to see him one last time.  And PIR is only a few weeks away, right?  I'll be thinking of you as well!

Hi DocMom98,

My son was sworn in today too, and is on a plane on his way to RTC right now. I am sad and proud and feel as though a part of me is on that plane too. The house is awfully quiet without my youngest! I am grateful to be able to share this experience with other Navy moms.

Oh, I understand PT mom.  It seems that everywhere I look, something reminds me of him.  He called when he landed so I know he arrived in Chicago, but now I'm waiting on "the call" saying he arrived at RTC.

My son called last night at 10:52. It was an 11 second phone call! It was great to hear his voice, and now I start waiting (and praying)...

Sounds like my call.  I got mine around 10pm and it was 13 seconds.  So sad.  I did download a call recorder app on my phone so I could record my calls with him so I can replay when I want to hear his voice.

It's so comforting to know that someone is going thru the exact thing that I am at the same time.  I'm thinking of and praying for you and your son.

Great idea about the app!  So going to look that up.

I am wondering when your son's PIR date is since he arrived on March 2nd?

Not sure if you are asking me, but my son arrived 3/1 and PIR is scheduled for 4/28 :-)
