My only daughter and baby of the family is leaving for BC on November 7th.  Please feel free to share any experiences or info that would be helpful!  We are very new at this, she is the first in the family to join the Military.  We are from Alabama so one of my major concerns is the weather in the winter.  Another major concern is she will be at BC for Thanksgiving, her birthday, Christmas and New Years.  Will the holidays prolong BC?  I've been advised by my daughter to not send gifts, but it is sad to think that she will not be with family during all of those holidays.

My son leaves on the 7th also. Our concern are the same as yours. We’re in SC and like Alabama, it’s hot as fire here and being in Chicago is a whole new world. I don’t even want to think about the holidays. I’m trying to maintain a non worried face but it’s tough. I know he’ll do well as will all of them. My son continues to remind me that he can take it.

Hi there!  My youngest Son is leaving on the 7th as well.  I do not know much about the process, but we are from Northern Illinois (about 2.5 hours from Chicago.)

The winter weather is cold, especially if you are used to such hot weather.  I'm sure she should get issued everything she would need for that, but there is no other word to describe the weather than cold.  I was born here, so I am used to it - and quite frankly love the winter.  The winds will be very cold when they blow off of Lake Michigan, but there again, dressing appropriately she will be fine.

Hello Again ~  I found this on another post and copied it regarding holiday packages.. (I'm new here - I hope it's ok :O)

Packages cannot be sent to your recruit, even during the holidays. They are not allowed to have any goodies from home, edible or otherwise. They will be taken care of. :)

No, the holidays most likely will not prolong BC. By counting nine Fridays, she will most likely have PIR on 01/04/2019. It could be the week after since she is arriving at the end of the week if she is held over for the next week's TG.  That happens sometimes for some who ship in November or December. It is possible for some who arrive on the same date to have PIR a week apart. Wait on The Form Letter to know the PIR date for sure. Arrival and What Happens at RTC within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) will let you know what to expect.

If she is in the 01/04/2019 TG, then she will be eligible for the Christmas Adopt-A-Sailor program. If she is, then she will send you info on that. If you are unable to adopt her for Christmas, then she will be adopted by one of the organizations in the area.

No, you cannot send any packages. See Letter Writing & Fun Stuff/Questionnaires to send to your Recruit for ideas of what you can send.

All of the training at RTC is indoors, so the recruits are not outside much, but when they are, they are bundled up well and all you can see is their eyes.

Hi!

Just wanted to offer a few words. My son left last year on Nov. 9th and we're from Texas so I understand the concerns with the weather. They provided everything they need for cold weather and most training is done indoors.

He was gone for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years as well and it was the first time we had ever been apart for the holidays. It is hard, but so worth it when you see those doors roll up at PIR and see your sailor for the first time. We took Christmas presents with us to PIR and celebrated then. Depending on when they are scheduled for PIR they may be eligible for the adopt a sailor program. If they are you will receive info about it. There are also groups in the community that adopt each division if you are unable to go and adopt your sailor and they leave base for the day and have a nice meal. My son's division was adopted by a church group and they provided cell phones so each of them could call home on Christmas.  It made me feel a little better since we were unable to go at Christmas. DO NOT send packages, only letters and no cards with glitter.

Hang in there! They will do great and once they graduate the communication is so much easier. This is a great group and has so much valuable info. It was my go to when I had questions.

You and your SR's will all be in my prayers.

My son leaves today as well.  We are from Illinois, so it may be a little different.  I HEARD that it's possible that they may have a 9 hour leave, and may go home with someone from the area.  That way, at least she won't be alone for the holidays.  I HOPE that's the case.  My son is the oldest of 3, so he's my rock.  I'm going to miss him sooooooo much.

It is not Leave; it is part of the Christmas Adopt-A-Sailor program if your recruit ends up in the 01/04/2019 TG. You or another loved one can check your recruit out or your recruit will be adopted by an organization in the area.
