THE BUILDING OF LEMOORE NAS
In 1954, the Navy searched the Northern California-Nevada area for land to build a master jet air station - one with congestion free air space.
Lemoore was chosen because of its central location, good weather for flying, relatively inexpensive land and the nearby accommodations. Construction started in 1958. With base housing, administration facilities and the flight training areas in operation, the air station was commissioned on July 8, 1961.
Located in the San Joaquin Valley approximately 40 miles south of Fresno, CA, nearly 5,000 military and 1,000 civilian employees work onboard, with an average payroll of $120 million per year.
NAS Lemoore's primary mission is to support fleet carrier squadrons. The heart of this mission is the operations area. Designed to support more than twenty fleet squadrons, it serves as a master training center for carrier-based strike fighter squadrons of the United States Pacific Fleet.

- I can tell you that it cost my son $110.00 dollars to take a cab to the base from Fresno when he first got there. There is some kind of shuttle to and from airport but it only runs certain times. I am also wondering why there are no discounts for the military personnel.

Comment by Jennifer on December 17, 2009 at 8:33pm - Travel time to the airport from NAS is about an hour to Fresno. Taxi's no, bus no, they can get a lift from a buddy usually or find somebody willing to take them to Fresno. Duty driver can only take and pick up people coming into the airport that are PCSing here, not actually on leave. If they are getting a 96 hr liberty pass, be sure they can actually leave the area. If they are on liberty NOT leave, there are usually restrictions on how far they can go, such as a 100 mile radius.

Comment by Pat on December 16, 2009 at 8:38am - Thank you Barbara. This is what I love about this site. You can instantly finding a lasting bond with other parents which is a great support group. Megan is with the VFA 192 (not sure if her entire squadron transferred) and she is a PR (parachute rigger). She made it to Lemoore safe and sound and very tired. :o) I'll check out the discussion you mentioned. Thanks again for being so kind.

My son has been in Lemoore for 6 years and is reenlisting for 6 more and will probably spend them all in Lemoore. I'm sure that your sailors will meet some people that would be willing to drive them to and from the airport for gas money. A taxi would probably cost a fortune. Pat, Beth and Becky, what do your sailors do and if they're with a squadron, which one? My son is with VFA25 until the end of February then he changes commands and will be an AE instructor on the Legacy F18. There is a discussion above called "Just the Facts Ma'am" where you can list your sailor and his rate so we can all get to know one another.

There doesn't seem to be many deals for the military. If you do get him a flight, he needs to figure in the travel time from Fresno to Lemoore.
Jennifer could be more specific on travel from the airport to the base. It's taxi, or bus??

- My son just arrived last early last week to Lemoore. Does anyone have any helps on getting a flight to Austin or Houston for the 96 hrs he's free at Christmas? Are there any deals out there for sailors/military? We are fairly new to this. US Airways seems to have the best prices but I was hopeful there were other specials for military. I appreciate any help.
