My son has been there since March 2009. He graduated Sub school a few weeks ago and is in A-School right now. He seems to be really enjoying it so far.

How do you grad from Sub school before A school? Sounds backwards to me. Anyway, what did he study that can be released without any OSPEC rules being broken?

My son leaves for boot camp October 1 at Great Lakes. His job will be as a machinist mate.

Be sure you have joined DEPPERS...in but not yet (I believe is the name of the group) and Boot camp Moms if you have not already. Ours was scheduled to leave last year in November, but left in June, so you never know. Love our MM's!

my daughter is at GL for machinist mate-Heather Krengulec.I was talking to some retired navy and they say a female for MM is cool- they will be called S>N>I>P>E>S>Dont remember what it stands for though!!I cant even begin to tell everyone how proud I am!!She loves guns and such..She scored a perfect score for a 9mm and 12 gu shotgun--so she got a bar for her efforts.Thats what she wanted to do ,however she tested out of that and is now a MM--This is a girl who couldn't change her own oil!!In the 6 wks accelerated boot camp..I cant believe what a changed person she is. She is still the same Heather deep down...but Navy has taken over!!I cant even describe how I feel when she calls.. I cry!! I have 4 kids and I cant believe my feelings. My son is 13 and a world traveler with People to People Student Ambassador Program for the past 3 yrs.I dont know which I am more proud of!!

My daughter Heather is a MM and staying at GL for school. What she is telling me is very scary...Heroin and etoh is rampent at the base!! In fact she told me.6/13 that everyone in there barracks is getting punished by not being able to have food & pop in their rooms because they had an "Alcohol related incident" on the base.. So they cant have any goodies for 30 days! With her 9 mm gun when she does patrol..she has to have someone else also.Scary!I am slowly learning to navigate the website..be patient with me.!

It is fairly new to me also but hears the little info I know,
I believe there are many different MM, I think it depends on what kind of MM they are where they go to A-School. Nuke MM's all go to Goose Creek SC, for A School and Power School and possibly prototype also, either there or Balston Spa NY. I know there are some MM that stay in Great Lakes for A school I'm not sure what kind they are though. My son ia a Nuke MM and he has mentioned that there are Nuke MM's and Conventional MM's which basically have the same duties. Except the Conv. MM can't work in the Nuclear power areas of the ships or Subs, but as a Nuke MM you could possibly be assigned duties outside of the Nuclear power areas.

I am interested in knowing about the other MM's though. Do you know where your Daughter will be going for A-school yet. This is the first I have heard of Aviation MM. FIll me in when you can.

I obtained this info from her enlistment forms. It is Aviation Machinist's Mate (AD/SG) Class A that my daughter will be doing in the Navy. A brief description is aircraft engine mechanics. Inspect, adjust, repair and overhaul aircraft engines and propellers. May also fly as Naval aircrew. I don't know where she will be going but I believe she mentioned Pensacola FL. I am still trying to understand the Navy terminology as there is alot of acronyms. Maybe this is the wrong group , not sure I am just goiong based upon her enlistment forms.
