Just asking for prayers for my mother. She just found out on wednesday that she has Lymphoma. we are waiting on more test to be done to see if it is hadgkins or nonhodgkins. She will also be having a test to see if it has spread anywhere else and then she will start treatments. She is not wanting to tell my son right now because he will be leaving for training. I feel he needs to know. What does everyone else here think about telling my son?

There is a separate building - Base Tours??? -- just outside of the main gate. You buy tickets, load on a bus, and they drive you around and tell you about the base. It's not cheap -- about $15 - but there are discounts -- veterans are free, Navy personnel are free, other military are free, etc., but you need to be able to prove you're military, veteran, etc. I was the only person in our group that had to pay the day we went.

I searched for the info in the internet and GPS'd the address & phone number. However, because my daughter lived down there for 4 years, she already knew the way.

The harbor cruises are wonderful too. In May they were boarding at Nauticus -- a museum in Norfolk -- something else worth seeing! There is a Navy ship at Nauticus that you can go and and walk around.

Linda - that sounds great! You mentioned a Norfolk Base tour....how did you arrange that?

Jenn was part of 4-man boat crew on one of those 25' boats. She loved the speed and excitement of the smaller boats. She was always telling me about maneuvers and high-speed turns and who almost fell over, etc. It really suited her personality.

If you get the opportunity to go back and spend some time there, be sure to take the Norfolk Base tour and go on one of the harbor tours. They are so informative and it really makes you appreciate the size of the base and I learned so much about the different locations down there (Little Creek, Dam Neck, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Oceana, etc.).

We dropped our son off at Portsmouth yesterday and he's getting settled in. He's in MSRON-2, BOATDET 21. I found a good bit of info this morning on the internet about the boats and size of the crews etc in these units. When we were driving thru Norfolk yesterday we actually were behind one of the 25' patrol boats on a trailer for a few minutes. Pretty interesting group I think.

My daughter is in Guam (MSRON-7) and her squadron consists of 3 detachments. I think she told me there are about 80 in her det.

Do any of you know how many people are in each MSRON squadron? And how many people in each boat detachment?

Hey Susan S - I saw the pic of your son's A school graduating class and our son Dan is in it! Back row, 5th from the left. He reports to Portsmouth on Friday. I'm asking him if he knows your son. Glen

Susan -- Jenn lived off-base the entire time she was stationed in Portsmouth even though she was an E3. Don't what the regulations are now. We actually saw her place (when she was on-base in Portsmouth) and it was actually pretty nice inside.

I love that area but the traffic is a nightmare!!!!!! Lots of tunnels and bridges.
