did you book directly through the airline? online or over the phone?

Okay, after hours and HOURS on the phone, here is the final skinny on Mobile vs. Pensacola: it costs more to get them in and out of Pensacola, but the only way to get them to Mobile is to either hire a car service ($120) or rent a car (about $200 plus they have to get to the P'cola airport to pick it up). Both American and Delta offer special Military tickets, which gets them the lowest fare available on flights, waives change and baggage fees BUT there are limited military seats on each flight. I just purchased tickets, after making reservations all over the place (they also let you hold military reservations for a week without paying for them), and it cost an arm and a leg, plus he had to give up a little bit of leave on both ends, but at least we know that we'll have him home for Christmas. Good luck, and I hope my research helps save someone else a few hours.

Oh, I meant to write "assigned". Sometimes my fingers are faster than my brains.

I know Greg was assigend to his squadron with "one other guy" (as he put it) but didn't mention any names. He and Shawn have been together through most of the training so it would have been nice to end up in the same squadron, but at least they're staying in SD for now.

Kari, sorry I don't remember which squadon Derik is in? No
he didn't end up with Greg either. Apparently there are quite a
few squadrons.
Beth-Shawns PDS is San Diego but he will still get to see the world when
he gets deployed. Says that won't be for at least another 10 months.
Thanks for the info.

DebbiJ, not sure where you are trying to fly your daughter TO, but I wound up flying our son out of Mobile on Sat. morning. I'm thinking that if there are enough of them they can rent a car or hire a car service together. Mobile airport is 90 minutes from base, vs. 45 mins for P'Cola airport. My son was anxious about trying to get off base and to the airport in time for 1 hour prior check-in Fri. p.m.: all of the flights I found were between 5:00 and 6:30. First flights out of P'cola are 6:30 sat a.m.. but even those that have seats left are much more expensive than flights from P'cola. We're all figuring this out together: by the time we have it figured out, they will have moved on to their next posts! See my earlier post about American Airlines: they were most helpful.

Christi,

DId Shawn end up in Greg's Squadron? Or is he with Derik?
DebbieJ Comment by DebbieJ on November 14, 2009 at 12:19pm
Looking at tickets to get daughter home for Christmas. Any suggestions? I can't believe the price of tickets! And did anyone find flights after 6 or 6:30 from Pcola? She says she can leave base at 4pm (her time) and the airport is nearby. Any help would be appreciated.

Christi glad to hear your son will be stateside. I couldn't keep Garrett home... The desire to see the world was too great.

I already made reservations for my son to come home for Christmas, flying out of Pensacola. Just read about checking flights out of Mobile, Alabama........did another search and if we had gone this route, would have saved $200!! Wow. I'll remember this. But, I have the same question msvines has, how do they get to Mobile and back again to Pensacola?
