Hi Moms,

My daughter is 24 and just shipped out yesterday. It was so hard on us. She on the other hand was super excited about her new journey. She is smart, confident, courageous and ready for this in her life. The call last night was different..so scripted, but hearing her gave me a sense of safeness and proudness. I have started reading your entries and I will write to her everyday since the mail may be an issue. I look forwarded to sharing and reading and learning everything I can. She is scheduled to graduate July 14 (on her 25th Birthday so she is super excited about that present). When should I start making travel arrangements?

I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers as well. MegsMom

I am in the same boat. My daughter left on Tuesday and I was ok until I got the call. It didn't sound like her at all & that's when I started worrying even though I know the call is very limited.

MegsMom,

I know it seems so unfair that their leaving is hard for us and they are super excited about it!!!  But then, I don't think we'd want it to be hard on them, so we smile broadly and share in their excitement and after they're gone we deal with the sadness!!!!  That's one reason why this website has been so invaluable to new Moms because we really do understand.  Just know, you are not alone!!!!

As far as travel arrangements, I would wait a little while and make sure that she is progressing along nicely.  Our family drove from Ohio so we didn't have to worry about airlines.  I don't remember where you're from if you will be flying or driving, but I have heard that Southwest Airlines allows you to change flights without too much hassle, but I don't have much more info than that about them.  As far as hotels and such, I used to live in Waukegan and there are plenty nice hotels in the area.  If you want to stay in the Navy Lodge you might want to make reservations soon but still hold off until you get her form letter and have her official PIR date.  Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Our daughter, too, is 24 (or will be next week).  She was so excited to be a nuke, after 2 years of finding just dead-end jobs even after graduating college.  It is really their own path.  The scripted call was difficult; it snapped us into realizing that hey, this is the NAVY not summer camp.  I've kept a diary and written something every day, even boring things like "Not much happened today, it was rainy."" Nothing scary, no politics or news except weather and movies we've seen (but just the boring ones, I don't want her to miss movies, a favorite activity). Mail and phone calls from her are very sparse.  Her  PIR (Pass in Review, graduation) is June 23, unless something happens. She warned us, and this blog shows, things can happen that delay PIR.  Only one call so far after that first scripted one, almost 2 weeks ago.  I just made motel arrangements this AM for then, and two of the hotels were already full, but two others had many vacancies.

SailorsLIMom,

It sounds like you are well on your way of handling this bootcamp stuff!!!  I know it's still tough on us, but there is such a joy and immense pride you will have when that PIR date gets here!!!  Best of all to your daughter and let us know how she's doing when you hear from her!!!

Hey Megs Mom....

My daughter graduates on June 23rd. We've reserved at the Navy Lodge. Others I know have stayed there and were very pleased. They also shuttle you to the graduation so no worry about taking your car. I would make arrangements now but as others have suggested leave your ticket open so you can change it in case something happens. I am close enough I get to drive Welcome to the group from another newbie mom lol

My daughter is also 24 and has been in the Navy exactly two years. This weekend she was just commissioned an Aviation Officer. When she first told me she was joining the Navy, I was flabbergasted. We are not a military family; I knew nothing about the Navy, but boy has it been a learning experience. The Navy needs more strong confident smart women. While she was at Officer Candidate School, I sent her copies of the letters she had written to me in Boot Camp. She said they made her smile, even the ones where she sounded lonely and forlorn. And thank goodness for the other Navy Moms (and Dads and spouses) on this and other forums who are always ready to give advice or just listen.

cdav,

What a beautiful picture, thank you for sharing.  You should put that on the group page for the other moms to enjoy!!!  What does your daughter do in the aviation community??  My daughter is a Flight Officer.

Hi Megsmom, I just read your post and I'm hoping PIR went well and she graduated!! Keep us updated if you can.
