I wanted to start this group for us parents that are getting emotionally ready for our sailors deployment

Hello,
To all you parents, siblings,Loved ones of our sailors! I thought this group could be helpful .
My son is getting ready for his first deployment. HE just told me its going to be a 10 month tour.
It seems like forever. I get overwhelmed sometimes.
This is going to be the 3rd deployment for our family. I have another son who has gone over twice. Hes a Marine.
I hope we can use this group to encourage each other through this time of change and transition.
Thanks,
KIM

Hello, my son is also getting ready to deploy he is not leaving in a ship he's a CM and is leaving to Africa..I am not sure what kind of care packages I can send him..As I have not really read anything or much of any deployments to this country.. this is his 1st deployment not sure what to expect...Any feed back would be appreciated..

Welcome Shirley... My son is also to be deployed Sept. out of San Diego... He isn't ship bound though, he is a SeaBee (SW)... Also our first time... The moms here are very helpful and supportive... Glad you found us...

I'm not really sure about that one. My hubby's return date was always shifting by a day or two. Maybe the other mom's will have a better idea. Anybody else been thru this already with a ship's return date??

thanks NortherRN, another question, how soon will I know when the ship is coming in to get plane tickets? The sooner we can buy them the cheaper they will be.

That's how I always got thru my hubby's deployments - thinking about the homecoming and making plans!! And I always had what I call my "marine mentality" (it got me thru bootcamp too - I'm prior AF)... put blinders on and concentrate on what's 5 minutes in front of you and 5 minutes behind you. You'd be amazed at what that can get you thru. :) That and thinking about banners & hotels & videocameras, etc will get you thru the worst parts... :)

Hi Rhonda, enjoy your 2 weeks, it is so nice to have them home with us.

Thank you NorthernRN, This is our 1st deployment so I'm not sure how it works,
I'm hoping for tips from the other moms. I told him as soon as he knows when he's coming in to let us know. Then we can plan our flight and hotel room. I am trying to stay positive and think about the homecoming instead of the leaving. I wish he weren't driving by himself.

Seabee - that would be great if you could be in SD for when his ship comes home!! I get a lump in my throat just thinking about it. :) I won't be in Hawaii when Logan's sub comes home, but Julia (my daughter) will be there and I'm sure she'll be beside herself with excitement! I've had "my day" with my hubby coming home from deployments. I hope you can get out to SD - it will be worth every penny!!! The excitement & pride just can't be described or measured. It's a memory you would treasure for the rest of your life. Start saving your pennies (ok, nickels & quarters too.. :) now... :)

Thank you, I agree he is better off not being tied down right now. And he did hang around at home moping a little longer than planned. He is excited to get going and get on his ship. I'm nervous about him driving to CA alone, I wish I could go with him, but we just can't afford it. She was supposed to drive back with him. but, I'm trying to convince myself, he's all grown up and can drive by
himself. I'm hoping to go to SD for the homecoming. We'll see.
