Way to go Erin, that has just got to be the best thing ever - what a rush that must be!

Patti, does all this waiting around time for the different flight stages "count" in their years with the Navy? Sorry if that's a stupid question...I am totally new to the military life.

I believe that Maverick is someone who was prior enlisted and going through OCS. I would have sworn that my son called them Mustangs but I definately could be mistaken though.

What's a Maverick? A Pilot? Is that just a reference to the top gun story?

I'm new to this site and don't really know any of you yet but have been reading the posts on here for a couple of weeks....I've been saying a prayer for Erin, Chris. My son will be in P'cola after OCS graduation in a couple of weeks...was prior enlisted on an aircraft carrier and worked fairly closely with the aviatiors which is what made him decide to take this path himself. I can't tell you how I was holding my breath for your daughter's sake with her carrier qualification and literally breathed a sigh of relief just now when I read your post. I am so happy for her and you...so glad all is well. I really love our military and know they have the very best of our young people serving....congrats to you and Erin!!!

Chris - Keeping your daughter in our prayers...and you, too! Can't wait to hear how she does (did you happen to watch "Speed and Angels" on HULU.COM ? It's a great documentary about the aviation journey)....Patty

Thanks for your kind words!

They only need to buy wings if they want them blessed, (which happens before the ceremony when they don't have their actual wings yet) - those wings stay at the church on a tapestry. They do get another set of wings at the ceremony.

I hope that makes sense :)

Hey all,
I am back and will apologize for the length of this.

Got home Monday night from Corpus, sicker than a dog. Fortunately, Texas sells Sudafed with the ephedrine in it (can't get it in Oregon because of the meth makers) - so I took every known over-the-counter drug to keep me going. Knew I could rest once I got home.

It was an amazing week - I'll talk about the winging first. It was a very busy day: first there was a little coffee/doughnuts "breakfast" in their squad room and the CO spoke about the base/training etc. Then, he surprised the wingees with their "soft wings" that no one thought they'd be receiving, so that was fun. There were 6 of them, 2 women-4 men.

Then on to the hangar tour and simulators - where my son proceeded to pull an engine off of the T44 while my Marine helo husband tried to fly. We got about 1 mile off of the base - it was pretty funny. From there, we only had about an hour before the blessing of the wings, so we ate at a little BBQ trailer right next to the NEX, had very good sandwiches.

Then the blessing of the wings was held at the Catholic Church, which was not attended by all, but was not overly religiously slanted so all denominations would feel comfortable (I figure we can use all the help) :) What we didn't know is that the wings actually remain in the church on a tapestry and that they will need to buy a pair at the NEX ($8) to leave there - the ones they get at the ceremony are provided by the Chamber of Commerce.

We had just enough time to run back to the hotel to change for the winging as everything up to this point was very casual.

The ceremony went too quick and fortunately, there was a professional photographer snapping away because it was tough to get photos because the family has a certain way that they have to go up to wing and with only 6 wingees, it really goes fast. Something was wrong with the operator of my camera :) and my pics did not turn out great so waiting on the professional ones.

There were vendors in the lobby selling art work/etc. Then right after the ceremony there is a reception in the O club, they had some finger food and you could buy drinks. At this point, it was about 5:30 and the party was starting at 8:30.

We ended up going back, changing into casual clothes and going out to dinner. Decided not to go to the party, as it was more for the wingers and their friends - so went back to the hotel.

He's all packed up and living at the Navy Lodge until Friday, when he leaves for NAS Jacksonville - he as a little bit of time before he has to report. Has SERE school in early April and then to his squadron after that.

I will post more about CC in the Corpus Christi info discussion area about the rest of our time there.

Sorry about the quality of this pic, but it's better than nothing.
