It happens everywhere. My son was bumped 2 times already ... delaying him about 6 months. However, once they call on you ... he's been flying almost twice daily every day and is now getting ready to do his carrier quals later in March on his jet - EA-6B Prowler. It happens, but only when the Navy is able and ready.

The have posted the article regarding the crash in WV on the navy web site:

NORFOLK (NNS) -- Rescue and recovery efforts are still ongoing following the Feb. 18 crash of a U.S. Navy MH-60S "Knighthawk" helicopter in a remote area of West Virginia, with the majority of the personnel safely extracted from the crash site.

There are injuries reported to the 17 crew and passengers aboard, but none of the injuries are life threatening.

There are no fatalities. The names of the injured are not being released at this time.

The helicopter is assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Support Squadron 26 from Naval Station Norfolk

Wow, I can't believe the back up. My son went to OCS in Pensacola back in 2005. Right out of OCS, the same day he graduated, he had his orders and checked in. He graduated on Nov 10 and had IFS in February and was in API shortly thereafter and left for CC on Memorial Day 2006. He got pretty bored waiting for IFS. I called him one time and could hear a bit of wind in the background. I asked him what he was doing and he said, "sitting on the beach reading". Me sitting in Colorado in a snow storm commented that I was sorry for him. His reply - "there are just so many times you can sit on the beach, reading and not be bored". Please bore me.

Lquerin - Hi! My daughter is checking out/moving from Pensacola on or around 2/26, to go to Jacksonville. She is leaving a fully-furnished, beachside, 3rd floor condo that is AMAZING! Rent is about $950.00 a month plus utilities. If you are interested I can get you the property mgmt company's info.

We had about a week to get from Rhode Island to Pensacola. Lots of the guys' wives came afterward, after they found a place to live, packed up, etc. I think Tracy had to check in within a week. It took us 3 days to drive down there (with stops along the way to visit friends), so it isn't bad. Message me to my inbox if you want more information and I can call you or something :)

Congrats on your husband's achievements!

Patty

Did anyone read the article about the hiker in Washington?

Eventho they recovered the hiker's body, they had to call on the Navy to undertake the mission, because the area authority did not have the experiste to fly the mission under the weather conditions.

So proud of our Aviators!!

Good thing I asked about SERE - did not realize/know that they all go through this after winging and that's where the boy is headed (he thinks it will be Maine) - so much to learn and remember - thanks everyone!

KathyB.....Depending on which version of SERE's they went through (Maine or California) they sometimes have to go through a second school to prepare for different missions.
