I would love to join this group if it is still active. I am the McKune/Comfort Family historian, and the Gyles Family Historian. I have alot of New England ancestors that I would like to know more about.

Welcome back Karen, It's been very quiet on this list. I know being on multiple groups can be time consuming. I've got my own group down to three groups myself.

Thanks for the link. maybe it will help me with a couple lines I'd like to get further along. We keep digging.

Enjoy your day, and happy hunting!

Its still here so I guess Ill join and see if this group gets going again. I had limited my groups to one page just so it was easier but am finding theres more than a page of groups I want to belong to. LOL I was just sent an email link yesterday that let me find out my sons (not my navy one) grandmother and oldest uncle on his dads side have both passed away. He hadnt seen them in 30 years. http://www.worldvitalrecords.com/ Its only free until tomorrow.

Sorry to hear that, I don't feel that it is necessary to remove the group. I enjoy talking with other Navy moms about genealogy and sharing ideas on how to research or display what we found.

Ladies, I'm deleting this group. My family lines came here as a result of religious persecution, by the new guidelines here on N4M...I'm sure it's not a topic that can be discussed any longer.

I'll give it a couple of days so you can pull any information off of here that you might need.

The photo album held 4x6" pics and some of the older photos were much smaller so I'd add a piece of scrapbook paper and maybe put a funny saying or quote that would go along with the pictures. I think putting them in an album really helped because he just wouldn't take the time to sort through the boxes that I found them in. It was fun for us kids and the grandkids to sit with him and listen to his stories, some we had heard before but other things were new. He even takes it down to Florida with him each winter and brings it back to Michigan in the summer months.

Old pictures are really a great way to jog some memories. My dad's aunt who was in her 90's at the time used to tell me she didn't remember when I'd try to ask questions about her earlier years in England. I'm not sure if it was really bad memory or just not wanting to share. I quickly learned on future visits to bring old pictures to her and she would tell me about the people in the picture and that would start other memories. One time she caught me writing down notes and she would add something silly and I'd look up to see her smiling, she'd tell me she was just checking to see if I was getting it all down. It always made me wonder if some of her stories were actual events or she was playing with me :) Still fun times with her and some of her information did help me in my research.
A few years ago when my father-in-law turned 80, I decided to make photo albums for the 4 kids and one for him with all the photographs just boxed up. Each album for the kids had their baby pics, school, pics, and family ones when they were young up to having kids of their own. For my F-I-L, I made a cover that said "The First 80 Years" and had pictures of him as a baby up until his 80th birthday. I think the album held something like 300 pictures and he would sit with anyone and start talking about those photos. It was probably one of the best gifts we could have given him. He also was in the Navy so when my daughter is visiting they sit together and say "Us sailors have to stick together!" It was great to see him at her PIR and tell us what had or hadn't changed since he had been to Great Lakes.

One night, when my mom was in early stages of Alzheimers, I decided to get out her BIG box of old photos that dated back to the early 1900's, and have her tell me "who was who". It was a wonderful night, of her explaing all the relatives, and even went into all the stories that she could remember from when she was a little girl. I now have that precious box of photos, many years later, and am thrilled that I can add these photos, names, dates and even captions, to my genealogy book. Wonderful way to preserve family history.
A friend also told me that she sat her elderly dad down, turned on the video camera on a tripod, made a pot of coffee, and just "chatted about the old days".
She said once he got past being camera shy,, the stories just came out, and she now has it all ready to pass on to her grandchildren, that never had the opportunity to meet their great gramp.
