SCARS OF THE HEART AND SOUL

Scars. We all have them, be they physical or cerebral/intellectual. The latter, one cannot see, but the pain is real and everlasting, akin to a dagger in one's heart.

The other day, I was out for a walk, something I force myself to do since Jason's death. Across the street from the apartment building where I live, people grow their flowers around their trees. At first glance, the imagery is beautiful. However, upon closer inspection of the trees, you see the cuts, the scars in their bark.

As I looked at this contrast of beauty (the flowers) and the scars on the trees, I thought of my life. I have beauty in my sons, but like the trees, I have scars to both my heart and soul.

People who have lost children deal with their pain in different ways, but anguish, invisible and unknown to many, throbs in one's heart and tortures the soul.

You wonder, what if. What if I hadn't signed the permission forms for Jason to join at age 17. Would the outcome of his life be different if he joined at age 18? What if he had not written novellas or was not born early, would there be a difference? What if? Would it make a difference to my heart and soul?

Scars. Unseen and yet, so deep, so permanent. Your heart, your soul feels the cuts as the tree does. And like the tree, can you truly cry out?
