Dont feel guilty, Angie. Just be glad. We all get our turns on having our Sailors home for holidays.

I want to say Happy Thanksgiving too, to everyone.

I am here in Port Hueneme, CA with my son this Thanksgiving holiday. Arrived today in the pouring down rain! LOL
But hey, who cares. I got to hug my son and it felt so so good!!!

Enjoy the holidays everyone!

Feeling a little guilty that I have my Sailor home for both Holidays when so many don't and won't be for a long while. So proud of all our young men and women, both Active AND Reserves! God Bless you Moms and your brave Sailors who have given the gift of their service to us all. They have my gratitude.

Teresa, welcome. I've heard Moms say that they breathed a sigh of relief when their child joined the Navy because they believed -and some were assured by their recruiters-that they would never go near "the sandbox". Sailors belong on ships, ships belong at sea... far out at sea, our of harms way, right? Simply not the case. When you sign up for the military in a time of war, there's always a chance you will get sent. "Needs of the Navy" prevail. However, our Reservists have some special circumstances which I am still trying to figure all out. The NCS program recruits do have a good likelihood of being called up.

That being said though, since your Sailor is a woman, it's doubtful that she will receive orders at the end of Corps school for either Camps LeJuene or Pendelton. They simply aren't sending the girls. You see, although the Marines have sent orders for many Corpsman this fiscal year (hence the recruiting push), they are much more likely to send the guys to FMF training currently since they are able to serve in front line combat and the ladies aren't. Makes more sense to send a FMF trained Corpsman who can be fully rotated. My son had an instructor briefly who had been trying for years to get FMF trained and they were only now sending her, after she had served three tours of duty elsewhere.

Not saying it absolutely couldn't happen- to further clarify-she actually could get sent to FMTB (Field Medic Training Battalion) at one of the two Camps, but the chances of going FMF afterwards are pretty slim to none currently. I suppose she could be sent to serve in one of the overseas Base hospitals or behind the lines Clinics in Iraq or Afghanistan. When is she scheduled to graduate?

There are many hours of studying and test taking to be done before those worries even possibly become reality. Best to focus now on encouraging her to do well on her studies. Those that have a GPA of 91% or higher will get to choose where they do their Clinicals, have a chance at a "C" school should an opening occur and have a better chance of getting one of the assignments on their dream sheet. If you haven't joined the Corpsman Moms Group yet, I highly suggest you do. Best wishes to Jessica and ((Hugs)) to you Mom. Some days are hard, that's o.k. Keep reading and posting. Hang in there!

Hello all! My name is Teresa and my daughter Jessica, is currently at Corpsman School in Great Lakes. She has been told that since she is a reservist, she will have to go FMF at Camp Lejuene, NC, then off to Iraq or Afghanistan. She signed up under the National Call To Service program. As far as I can tell so far, this was a horrible decision on her part; but, she had just turned 18 and thought she knew it all. We were told many "half truths" from the Recruiter. I was told she would never see Iraq. I guess that is true if she gets sent to Afghanistan. Sorry - a little upset today.

am confused. Can someone help me or direct me where to go. My son had some problems with job changes and the recruiter. We were set to leave sometime in september we were at MEPS and the recruiter had done everything mess up with paper work crazy day. I could not get to my son and he could not leave. Well anyway he had to change jobs for a number of reasons one being so he could get out as fast as possible because he went in as a reserve and needed to get BC and training done to get to college he is accepted to Rutgers. Well I should no better plans never go according to my plan. He changed from MA to advanced electronics I think he said the initials are AECS. I can't find anything about this. He has heard it was 8 months training then 11 months and now it may be 2 years. I am not sure where to find this out and I need to inform the college. WOW, he would have went active and was accepted to NUKE. He is so upset right now. He wants me to call his recruiter (whenever i do he does not answer) but right now I better not I am upset and if he answers I may be mean. Well sorry to vent and ramble. But if someone can help thanks

They will get a certain amt for college and the kids will choose on how to spend it. If she wants to spend it on a private college, that is fine. You don't get any special money for private schools. Just a set amt.
Her recruiter should have all that kind of information. Ask.
