My son just got his job today. He is a Sea Bee and ships out in February. He is super excited and I am trying to understand what it is that he is going to be doing. His recruiter said this is a special field that they don't just let anyone into, is that true?

Hi davidswifey22,
My son also went to Gulfport about 5 plus yrs. ago. I'm sorry to say that I don't know about leave time during A school. He was down south and we are in KC MO, so I only went there for his graduation. So sorry that I'm no help in that dept.
As far as Iraq or Afganistan just keep in mind he will be given plenty of notice before he goes on any deployment. The SeaBees are a support group for the Marines, often times building their bases, watch towers, etc. So if they are sending more Marines somewhere, often times SeaBees are going as well.
I know how scarey it can be, my son has been to the sand box as well as Guam. They can call home on satalite phones sometimes, as well as on the computer if they are on a base. Those calls mean the world, to those of us back home.
Just hang in there, keep positive thoughts only, and support your sailor anyway that you can.

Hi Ladies!
I am new to this group, and hopefully Im in the right group bc Im so lost! My husbund just found out that he is going to A-school in Gulfport Mississippi to become a steelworker. Does anyone know if he will get any days off for the holidays? I only live about 3 hours away and I am already planning on being there to see him most weekends, but it would be amazing to see him during the holidays!
I also kinda got from him that there is a very high chance of him going to Iraq or Afganistan now? Im so nervous about this whole thing!

Hello Margie!

He is on cruches and reporting for duty every day, thank God! He thinks he may need surgery but at the time I spoke with him didn't know at this time. I told him to do whatever he is told to do so he can if at all possible stay with his platoon because he wants to remain with his friends. He did mention he is doing office work and whatever else he is told to do. So at this point you are correct in everything you said. It was so scary at first because I'm thinking the injury must be very severe and he was coming home. I would love for him to come home but not for that reason, he loves what he is doing and I would hate for his career to end. Thank you Margie for your prayers and all you do!! I'll keep you posted!

Hi there,

The command will get him whatever medical attention the diagosis requires, then they will put him on limited duty and assign him to some desk work. Yes, if he isn't 100% before they deploy, he will not go with them. Typically, he will not be sent home until he is healed from the injury unless the command approves him for leave (vacation), which is not likely if the injury requires physical therapy, etc. Also, he is still an asset to his unit, and can perform vital office duties in support of their upcoming deployment. They may assign him some classes to take while he's on limited duty. It just all depends on his injury, diagnosis, and prognosis.

Unless he has totally destroyed his knee, an recoverable injury should not impact his career. He may or may not be temporarily assigned to another part of the unit while he recovers. It's "wait-and-see" at this point. Is he hospitalized? Or is he in a brace and on crutches and still reporting for duty every day?

He'll be in my prayers for a total recovery!

I just received a phone call from my sailor, the kind of phone call no one likes to get. He is a Seabee and is in Gulfport. He said Saturday he inujured his knee really bad while running, and is going for an MRI today. Does anyone know what happens to Seabee's when they are injured? Do they send them home for recovery or find another job/training while they heel? He said he may not deploy with his batallion if he doesn't recover in a certain period of time. Can anyone provide any information for injuries?
