Marieee, you are lucky to get a phone call. Thanks for the encouraging words.

AshNichole4, I read on a sailors blog that had been through boot camp already that there is limited space. He definately wanted pictures but kept emphasizing the fact that space was very limited. I haven't heard from my son yet, so I only know what I read online from someone else..

Does anyone know how many pictures are appropriate to send during boot camp? If I send 2 2x3 pictures of my boyfriend and I will that be fine? Will be get crap for it? I have heard bad and good stories. I guess it depends.
Please help!

Hi ladies! I got a call from my fiancée today! It lasted about 24 mins. He got there on the 19th and it's been a little over a week already. I was at work when all this happened. I was listening to songs on my iPhone when suddenly my phone rang. I saw 847 area code and instantly knew it was him! I was so happy that my hands were shaking. He sounded really good! He said he missed me a lot and told me that it was really nice hearing my voice. I couldn't put him on hold while I was on the register cashiering. I was talking to him and I didn't care. Good thing my manager came in and took over for a bit. Anyway, he said the week went by quick but the days are slow. He also said they haven't started PT yet so he's been getting fat with the food. He mentioned that lights out were at 8 and they usually start the day in between 4-6 depending if they have a long day ahead of them. He said his RDC has some swagger lol. I guess the guy isn't that bad. Lol! He also mentioned how ugly his glasses are, but since everyone looks the same no one cares. The funniest part of the conversation was when he said "we got peanut butter shots! My butt hurts!" lol I guess the penicilin shot is rather painful. He was so surprised with how much I knew. He was telling me one thing and I finished the sentence for him. He thought it was very sweet and cute of me to know all these terms when he hasn't even told me what it was. Apparently he's getting his wisdom teeth out in a few weeks. So he'll be SIQ for 3 days or so. He said I should receive his letters this week. I told him I write to him everyday and should receive about 7-9 envelopes during their first mail call. My mom is beginning to send him some letters too! I told his mom that he's doing fine and she's happy to hear that he sounds well. He got a yeoman job..he said some fancy name for it but basically he said he's a yeoman in charge of ironing or something? Which was cool because he's very good at ironing. Rare to see in men. Anyway, now I can sleep well. :)

On January 8th, what about yours?

When is your sailor's PIR?

Maria-yes you're right about that, the Navy Lodge is on the base but 1-1.5 miles from the Metra train station. Oops =X

The Red Carpet Inn does have a free shuttle, but only on graduation days so getting to the Metra on any other day requires a cab. Sadly, the Navy Lodge doesn't have a free shuttle, but I believe there are shuttles that will cost $3 per way to get to the graduation hall on graduation days.

Thanks for catching that! :)

Caramelatte, the Navy Lodge is right at the base if I am not mistaken. And both of those hotels have free shuttles to the base.

Jodia-I've been looking for days on how to get around Chicago without renting a car, as I am not old enough to do so (okay I'll admit that I don't have a license either so driving anywhere is out of the question). So far, I've found that there is a shuttle service (http://airportexpress.com) that will take you from O'Hare to hotels located near the base which costs roughly $50 per person per way. It seems that the best way to get into Chicago is by taking the Metra. The closest hotels to the Metra train station is the Red Carpet Inn or the Navy Lodge, both which are appox. 1 to 1.5 miles away from base. I doubt they are in walking distance because of the weather come January 8th. I think the easiest way (but certainly not the cheapest) to get into Chicago is to take a cab from your hotel to the nearest Metra station and then take the train into the city.

Good luck on your search. If anyone else has better ideas or know of any cheaper ways of traveling without a car, please feel free to share! Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
