Just a hello from a new member here. My son leaves for BC tomorrow, estimated PIR Aug. 17th. Then on to A-school. We have lots of kiddies at home so my husband will go to be BC graduation and I'll visit him in A-school. I understand there are 3 sections. Are there graduation ceremonies for each section? How long are each section? I may try to plan my visit for a time when he will be graduating (assuming there are no problems of course).

Hi MommaV7 - yes there are 3 sections.  A School, Power School and Prototype.  The entire process from boot camp to proto grad will take right around 2 years.  If you look on the main nuke page over to the right (under the member profiles) you will find pages posted that explain the program and the length of time of each class.  There's lots of good info there - don't let it scare you though!

Here's a quick rundown of the time frame for nuke school:

A School - MM - 14 weeks, EM and ET - 24 weeks (in Goose Creek only)

Power School - 24 weeks (in Goose Creek only)

Prototype - 24 weeks (either in Goose Creek or Ballston Spa, NY).  When they get to prototype they will have to move off base and they get BAH (housing allowance).

ELT School - after prototype (only for MM's - if selected) - 13 weeks

Welder  - after prototype (only for subs - if selected) - 13 weeks

What the jobs study:

MM:  Mathematics, physics, thermodynamics, mechanical theory, fluid flow, safety, general engineering maintenance, hand tools and test equipment, valves, piping fittings, bearings and lubrication, pumps, steam turbines, reduction gears, heat exchanges, condensers, air ejectors, air compressors, refrigeration, air conditioning, evaporators, propulsion plant piping systems overview

EM:  Mathematics, physics, AC/DC electrical theory, test equipment, maintenance and repair, safety, transistor theory, vacuum tube theory, communications, transmitters, receivers, pulse techniques, synchro-servos, magnetism and magnetic amplifiers, digital electronics, microprocessors, radar, AC/DC motors and generators

ET:  Mathematics, physics, AC/DC electrical theory, test equipment, maintenance and repair, safety transistor theory, vacuum tube theory, communications, transmitters, receivers, pulse techniques, synchro-servos, magnetism and magnetic amplifiers, digital electronics, microprocessors, radar, AC/DC motors and generators

Thanks so much! That's really helpful. Talking with my son he'd like to do MM but we'll see what they put him in. I don't think I can wait 6 months to see him so I'll plan to go a month or so after he gets there and then maybe go back for graduation. I haven't fully explored the page so I didn't see the descriptions you mentioned. Thanks for telling me about them!

They will ask him his preference - MM, EM or ET - but at the end of the day it's all "needs of the Navy".  You (and he) will learn this quickly!  That and "hurry up and wait"!

Thanks

MommaV7 - Also, just FYI, because this was asked just yesterday, I think in the regular comments. There are not restrictions on the number of people that are invited to A-School, Power School, and I think Prototype like there is at BC.

Your sailor will need everyone's age, birthday, possibly place of residency, and I am not sure if they needed the social security number or not - but I would gather all of that information to be able to have ready to share with your sailor. They will call and ask for it several weeks before A school graduation (I haven't been through PS grad yet) and your sailor may not have much time between when they call and when they have to turn it in, so having it together someplace for you to lay hold of is helpful.

I just wanted you to be aware of that, so that you could plan to take the family with you to GC. If there is a large group of family members attending graduation, they will host it in the gymnasium versus a room in the Rickover.

Great! Thank you!

Can you tell me what ELT is after protoype, if picked?

"ELT stands for "Engineering Lab Technician". These guys (and gals) are responsible for the chemical and radiological aspects of nuclear power operation. All ELTs are selected from a pool of MM's (Machinist's Mates) and are sent to further schooling. Because ELTs are derived from machinst's mates, they do have mechanical skills in addition to their Chem/RadCon skills."

is it a promotion? Is it random? Better job than just MM? Thanks for your help

It is a good thing - more schooling/more knowledge.  My sons GF was picked up for ELT and we have others on here who's sailors were chosen for ELT (PattiP's  and I think maybe NancyJo's sailor).  At the end of the day it doesn't hurt to have it!  Again, only MM's can get picked up for this.
