I didn't know that some hospitals were reimbursing the cost of education for physical therapists.  That makes me feel a little better!  :)

My daughter is graduating high school as well. I was reading an article that says more and more of our children are going into the hard sciences such as medical fields and whatnot instead of humanities just so they can make enough to pay their loans back - more engineers, less social workers. Fortunately she wants pharmacy so hopefully that works for her. My older son has his degree in psychology, and nobody he graduted with is working in their field.

Just like always - we have to cross our fingers and hope and pray that the world works out for all of them!

J's mom,

I agree with you that the economy is discouraging.  These news articles are trying to make everything sound like it's getting better but it's not.  People have quit looking for jobs and they aren't counting the people who's unemployment has run out.  Our local unemployment rate is close to 15%.  We have so many factories that have shut their doors and those jobs will never come back.  During the 1980 recession these factories let lots of workers go but the factories were still there but now most of them are closed for good.  I'm glad my son decided to become a Nuke and this is an education he could never get in the civilian work place.  I have a daughter graduating high school this year and she wants to be a physcial therapist but it's going to be 7 years of college and the thought of the cost makes me ill but we'll just take one year at a time.

J's mom...never said it was "surging" but it is getting better. And, lower wages, leaner benefits, more competition--it's all historical...every single time we go through an economic collapse it's the same story. Hopefully--and I'm really really praying--that our leaders are smarter this time and don't allow our economy to be built on a foundation of sand. To be completely honest, if you want the "real" unemployment figures, it's actually up around 15%--"they" don't count the people that have simply stopped looking for work.  Anway, my intention is not to turn this into a political forum...I just wanted to add my 2 cents--which I guess is really worth only 1/4 cent.

Connie, yes it was really tough there for a while, hence the huge upsurge in military enlistments (there was even a hold for a while).  However, "it" is getting better...believe it or not, we really are starting to make headway. And, while many people might think they can hack the nuke pipeline, as we all know, it's a whole lot tougher than just aptitude...every single one of them has the aptitude, it's the attitude that the Navy is trying to weed out.

Our local paper (Philadelphia, PA) just ran a big piece about the bleak job opportunities for Gen Xers (ages 19 to 30), who as a group tend to be very if not over-educated, but are finding it really difficult - impossible almost -- to find employment that will allow them to live on their own, get married, start families. Many young people are carrying $25k to $150,000k college debt.  Makes this Navy nuke situation all the more attractive. Let's encourage our sailors to do the best they can in all 3 phases of nuke school and take advantage of the training ... whether they then go career Navy or enter the civilian job market. I, for one, am very thankful that I'm not just starting out in this tough world!!

J's mom, glad to hear that he was more relaxed when you visited him at A-school. My son seemed like he really could not relax when we just went to his PIR. He was concerned about getting back in time from his liberty, (he had watch that night) and he never really just seemed like himself. I know it is hard when they have been so programmed so I am hoping it gets a bit better for him. I texted with him a bit yesterday and both his brother and sister texted him today a little bit. Conversation still seems like a struggle, like I have to pull it out of him. I hope that changes now that he is in A-school.

mrgnq6 - My son had PIR on 3/2, but was told he would class up on 3/26, but then he actually classed up on 3/19.  It was good he had 2 weeks to get used to life in SC, but he did get bored.  Now he is really busy and I am sure he wishes he could go back to the 2 weeks at the beginning.

Thanks so much for your help.  I got to talk to him a little bit ago and told him to apply for the liberty this week.  I am glad to find out this could all work out.  I am really excited about Charleston.  I haven't been there before.

J's mom - did he have to go back to the base for watch duty, etc or did you get him for the weekend?  I am wondering when they have exams and could our dates conflict with this.  I texted him to find this out, but I thought this would be a better source of info :)
