Good morning Everyone, Twelve hours from now my sailor should be stepping off the plane for 2 weeks at home. Can't wait!!! I want to wish all our sailors who are traveling a safe journey. And to all my friends, a VERY Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. For all your support, encouragement, and love this past year, I say thank you!!! Pat

PIR = Pass In Review (that's graduation for us civilians!) The call after Battlestations came for me about 10:00 at night, so just expect it anytime.

What kept me sane during boot camp was just being thankful that this wasn't the "wild west" 200 years ago, where it could take 6 months (or longer) to get a letter to someone (esp family back in Europe) - imagine how difficult those conversations were =)

I do understand how having to get reservations etc put together these things are very helpful and nice to have. These days we have all come to rely on things being done this way.

I was in the Marines eons ago and the only way I had to get a hold of my family was a collect call or snail mail. Times have changed!

BLW - you're absolutely right! And after 8 weeks of non-communication, another few weeks of payphones isn't too bad. I think that if he wasn't trying to schedule leave and get a flight without a phone or computer readily available, it wouldn't have been nearly as stressful for my sailor. I think that in today's world, the phone just represents that they're connected, and even if they're not allowed to use the phones, at least they feel like they're still connected to what they left behind.

Even if you are unable to get the laptops and cell phones to your sailors right after PIR, it isn't the end of the world. You and they have just gone through several weeks without them and there are still ways to communicate.

I didn't get my son's stuff to him until he was at GC for about 2 weeks and he was resourceful enough to use his roomies phone for short calls and had a phone card still too. He found some computers that he could use for non-personal stuff and managed just fine. I guess it is kind of funny how in recent years we have all come to rely on these things and think we can't live without them now.
Just remember it wasn't that many years ago that sailors were graduating and going to new bases and they didn't even have cell phones and computers!

Our sailors RDC said that as soon as they stepped off the bus at the airport they were no longer under the control of RTC, but rather their "A" school. Hence they could "legally" have more stuff, the limiting factor being what they could carry on the plane. Our guy checked his Sea Bag, long before we arrived at the airport to see him off.
