Hi Cassandra. Your husband will be so busy with classes and studying that he may not have much time to even talk with you. It's very stressful for them. The best thing you can do is be supportive and stay positive even if you are tempted to unload on him and and tell how much you miss him. It'll be hard for you too. Will you be living on base with him? If so, that will help ease his stress even though he won't see you most of the time.

I'll be moving down to GC in early November with my husband as he gets ready to start A school...what are some things that I can do to ease his stress a bit while we're there? I obviously can't study for him (haha, I'm a History and Art major, not much I can help him with, I'm sure), but do you have any "little things" suggestions?

My son just started power school this week at Goose Creek. I'm even more concerned about him after hearing about your sons. I now plan to write to him more often with the hopes that it will help him. I though the stress would let up once they get to prototype school - sounds like it doesn't. Thanks for the "heads up"

The stress is definitely there- unlike other areas that are more physical our nukes have the major brain stress. Now that my son is on a sub I realize the stress that he went through in bootcamp, A school etc. were all there to prepare him for the MAJOR stressors that occur being on a sub in the very stressful jobs nukes have. I can tell you I also heard - "I am too busy". I found the best thing was to keep telling him how proud I was of him, how I loved him and was always here for him if he needed to talk. If he told me of times when he went out with friends or had friends over I was so excited to know he was "blowing off steam" ;) I remember when I mentioned at first he "needed" to go out and spend time with others he would just say "you don't understand mom". You know what- he is right. I did not understand and probably never will the stress they go through. When I began just trying to understand by not pushing him to get involved and just calling to say hello, sending "surprise" packages with his favorite candy, a note of how proud I was with notes from his other family members, I started to see the stress lessen. We never talked about it I was just a silent supporter and continue to do the same thing- just email everyday and give him some silly quotes, stories, keep it light but I ALWAYS end with REMEMBER- WE ARE PROUD OF YOU and WE LOVE YOU VERY MUCH! Thank you for keeping us safe. Life is tough for our kids and it is hard as Moms to not be able to "fix it". Just keep letting them know you are there in anyway you can. Take care all. Thank you ALL for your service! Kathy

Cheryl,
It's nice to know that we may receive some kind of communication from the Navy and that they are concerned about the stress level of the sailors. My son is very stressed and tired. He's putting more pressure on himself which is not helping his stress level. I have asked him to call even if it's just to vent. He said that he can't because he doesn't have time. There's got to be a way for these sailors to de-stress.

Any Nuke Moms in the Northern Puget Sound Area - get together alert! Some N4Moms are coming to Friday Harbor for the day on 11/24 for shopping, visiting and lunch. Leave your car at the Anacortes terminal and walk off - I will meet you!

My son was in Goose Creek for the first part of A school and told me they were very stressed and he couldnt always call. When he started the next part of school in Saratoga Springs, NY, I received a form letter from the commanding officer of the level of stress the Nukes are under and that sometimes the recruits only tell thei loved ones so if you noticed anything to contact him. My son made it through it and is finally being stationed in Groton on the USS San Juan. Kind of bitter sweet cause it has kind of been like he was away at college and safe!
Thanks for the heads up Lyn on Groton. So far I havent been able to travel to SC or NY to visit him but we will definitely make it to CT and I have heard Groton is a beautiful town.
