Sherry ~ I cried reading your comment. It brought back memories of my son's graduation 4 years ago. The journey continues, and pride will be your companion. Much Love, Bobbi

Hi,

I am back Graduation it was awesome . And I was so proud , Sean now has completed Power school and will stay in Goose Creek for the rest of his school. Moms if your Sailor is in SC for Nuke school this school is awesome. And this graduation is so neat. You just can't help and cry. Also for the Moms who first read my message when I went to Great Lakes for Sean's Boot Camp graduation I have to say he has came along way. I am seeing a man grow and mature just like the Navy promised. He is home on leave right now and has called me three or four times -- WOW-- and he offered to come over and go to church with me and his step dad. He will be joining me for lunch tomorrow. I am one luckily mom! I have to tell all I am so proud of my Son. I just want to let everyone know that if you will be going to Goose Creek we stayed at the Best Western in Ladson this is just around the corner from NNPTC. It is the Best Western Magnolia Inn their number is (843) 553-8888 the rates were good and the room were nice not the Hilton but nice and service was good. Just tell them that you received the information from a mom on Navy Moms on line and they said they would give you a good rate. Let them know you are there for your Son or Daughter Graduation. Patriots Point is a great place to visit. And Charleston is full of history. Well my Son is now ready for another chapter in his life Thank You all for being there for me as I also grow with the changes I have to over come while My Son My Sailor, My Hero, continuous his new journey in life. Love to all

Cheryl, Discovery also has a series on DVD called Sharks of Steel. Its a few years old but if you can get a hold of a copy its worth watching. My son is on a Fast Attack, USS Miami and is stationed in Groton.

Here's another one that's good: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/subsecrets/

You can virtual-tour a fast attack sub, and there are descriptions of sub life written by submariners. I will tell you there is more room on a boomer than an attack sub (says Son), and that the food is better on a sub than a carrier (less folks to cook for). Good luck to your son... I know you're thrilled to be having him home!

Thanks for sharing that info Kaye S. My nuke sailor started out wanting a carrier, now he has started talking about subs. I will watch the video and maybe it will give me some insite on the subject. He has graduated A school and is currently in T-track waiting to class up for Power School. Coming home on leave next weekend, it will be the first time he has been home since he left for BC.

Nuke Moms, for those of you with future (or present) submariners, I found a place on the Discovery Channel's website about "How Submarines Work." It had 8 topics, with videos. I learned alot!

Hi Debbie~ if your sailor can fax written orders to the airline with the change of dates they should waive the fees. We have had luck with this in the past. Tell your son to always mention he is active duty military, many companies will cu you a break, even if they don't advertise.

I have a question for the moms with experience. My son originally understood he would get off Dec. 22 for the Christmas holiday and be off until Jan. 2. This has changed to Dec. 19 and Jan. 4 which is wonderful except he had already bought a ticket for Dec. 22 and would like to come home the 3 days earlier. The airlines is charging him an extra $150 dollars to change is reservation. Is this time final? How do you make plans as you can't wait until the last minute for plane reservations. Can this date change again?

Hi Bobbi and Julia--I'm glad to hear from other Nuke Moms whose sailors are finished with all the Nuke schooling and on assignment. Our nuke was assigned to a new carrier (rather than a sub) over a year ago, but they're still not out to sea. We also don't hear about his work much--he always says either we can't know, we wouldn't understand, or it's too frustrating and he doesn't want to talk about it. When he's home on leave he wants to be as civilian as possible, so we don't even get to see him in uniform!! We continue to be proud of him--my has he grown up in four years of Navy life....

Hi Nuke Moms - I am new to the site and happy to be aboard. My son is beginning his last month (or so) of deployment on a fast attack sub after 4 years. I think this deployment has been the toughest. Hardly any e-mails and less phone calls, not as many ports visited this time. Not sure where shore
duty will take him and his new bride. Any questions about nuke school,
Ballston Spa, or quirks of sub life, drop me note. He also married a girl from South America so I have experience with that situation too. Bless you all.
