I got this off another group and though I would share, it was too nice not too. For anyone who have sailors who will be out at sea over the holidays.

A SAILOR'S CHRISTMAS

Twas the night before Christmas, the ship was out steaming,
Sailors stood watch while others were dreaming.
They lived in a crowd with racks tight and small,
In a 80-man berthing, cramped one and all.
I had come down the stack with presents to give,
And to see inside just who might perhaps live.
I looked all about, a strange sight did I see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stockings were hung, shined boots close at hand,
On the bulkhead hung pictures of a far distant land.
They had medals and badges and awards of all kind,
And a sober thought came into my mind.
For this place was different, so dark and so dreary,
I had found the house of a Sailor, once I saw clearly.
A sailor lay sleeping, silent and alone,
Curled up in a rack and dreaming of home.
The face was so gentle, the room squared away,
This was the United States Sailor today.
This was the hero I saw on TV,
Defending our country so we could be free.
I realized the families that I would visit this night,
Owed their lives to these Sailors lay willing to fight.
Soon round the world, the children would play,
And grownups would celebrate on Christmas Day
They all enjoyed freedom each day of the year,
Because of the Sailor, like the one lying here,
I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone,
On a cold Christmas Eve on a sea, far from home.
The very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.
The Sailor Awakened and I heard a calm voice,
Santa, don't cry, this life is my choice."
"Defending the seas all days of the year,
So others may live and be free with no fear."
I thought for a moment, what a difficult road,
To live a life guided by honor and code.
After all it's Christmas Eve and the ship's underway!
But freedom isn't free and it's sailors who pay.
The Sailor say's to our country "be free and sleep tight,
No harm will come, not on my watch and not on this night."
The Sailor rolled over and drifted to sleep,
I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours, so silent, so still,
I watched as the Sailor shivered from the night's cold chill.
I didn't want to leave on that cold dark night,
This guardian of honor so willing to fight.
The Sailor rolled over and with a voice strong and sure,
Commanded, "Carry on Santa, It's Christmas, and ALL is Secure!"
HONOR, COURAGE AND COMMITMENT

The big oaf, aka Chief is such a character. He loves to sleep/relax in the bathtub.. I have heard of alot of newfs like to do that. I guess Sparky our lab taught him the recycle garbage pail. I likes to go after cat food cans if they are in there, and my husband made tuna salad last week and I kept catching him walking out of the kitchen with tuna cans in his mouth... He's losing his puppy fluff. I find tuffs of fur all over the house..lol. He still looks like a little bear, but the fluff is going away. The cat Soiree actually charges him if he gets too close that is funny to watch. This cat doesn't back down at all!!. Have to admit that it's funny as anything to watch the cat charge down a newf pup who is 10X his size.LOL

Letting a pet go is the hardest thing any pet lover has to do. My work in the Vet office is great the hardest thing I have to do is hold the hand of an owner when it is time to help a pet along to the other side. I have seen to many pets suffer because the owner was not ready to let them go, and I have seen people turned away because the pet was not sick enough to put down (some people are just jerks). I have had to hold my own pets while they left this world behind, and throw it all each day I do my job there is only one thing that is the same in all the passings you can hear the heart breaking of all the human companians when the pet takes it last breath, but then you see and feel the relief of knowing that the right thing was done because the pet is at peace. Please understand they can not make a living will, they can not tell you how much it hurts they have no words to say good bye. It is hard and the day I feel no pain when an animal leaves this world is the day I give up my job. Let them go and be free let the suffering stop and make the pain go away it is the last selfless act you can do for your pet when the time comes.

Thanks, Kelly. The leave always seems too short, no matter how long it is. Haven't seen the coatimundi or whatever it is again. Karen, that was a beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing.

One of the ones shot is from the Kans city area. They showed her and talked to her family on the news tonight. They said he has been to Iraq once and didnt want to go back. Those poor moms who have lost their children.
