To Kelly and all parents.... Regarding roomates in A Schools and going to their duty stations.... Always tell your child that it is vital for them to lock their closets/lockers when they are not in them, even when they are alone in their barracks room. Once in that routine they wont forget to do it. The reason is that even if you have a roomate, or rotate through roomates, your stuff will be safe. Its tempting to put out things on the dressers and walls and night stands and such, but if it is valuable to you... lock it up. I had a few roomates and even if they seem nice, dont trust them. I have had camcorder stolen from me, and even an undergarment item! A Navy issued Rain coat and other things. So make sure they keep everything locked up. Even if they are only stepping out of the room for a minute or two. (Save them some pain and frustration). And if they can get a locksmith or someone to put locks on their dresser drawers at their command (some places out of usa dont have the locks) I would recommend doing it.

Reply to Kelly - Just so you know it is best to ask for the regular or sale prices of things that you are seeking to buy, before you tell them you are intersted in a military discount. That is one of the things we learned the hard way. Even with the airlines, they usually give you a price HIGHER to pay if you ask for a military discount or pricing. So ask for regular prices first and then military, so you can decide if you want to get "their" military discount pricing or not.

Thanks Kelly, I appreciate the information. I haven't found anything on this site so far, but will continue to look. I should have been searching for "liberty".

That's wonderful that your son is so close. Tobias is 3000 miles away from us. I hope that once he's stationed in his more "permanent" location, he'll be on the west coast.

Kyle is in Great Lakes for School, and I'm not sure it works the same there. Kyle has had weekends off if he doesn't have duty. He is allowed to go only so far from base without taking leave\Liberty. I'm not sure which is which but one allows you to stay within a certain distance and the other is like your vacation time where you can go anywhere.

Fortunately Kyle lives within the distance where you don't have to use your vacation time. So he could come home for a weekend if base would allow the time off. However, GL is now on lockdown and no one is allowed off base for a while.

There are discounts for Military personnel traveling via air, bus, car, train. All you have to do is book it that way, then show your id when you get the tickets. Also at GL they have the MWR which will help them book travel. I'm sure there must be a site on this space that discusses that. You might want to check it out.

Kyle told me that he gets to come home for Christmas since school closes for two weeks. I sure hope it's true. Good luck with your sailor and congratulations on Sub school. My brother took that route too. He just retired this past October as Lt. Commander. He spent 30 years in the service and retired at 50! He's living the life now.

I posted a comment a couple weeks ago and then accidentally deleted it. My son Tobias is at Sub School in Groton. He's very happy with the amount of freedom he now has. I'm not so sure it's a good thing. :) Does anyone know how leave works in terms of how soon they know and whether there are any discounts for airfare, etc.? Tobias thinks he may be able to come home for Thanksgiving but really has no idea.

I don't seem to get emails when postings are made to the group although my settings are all correct. Is anyone else having that problem?

Hello everyone, Kyle is in ATT school now and loves it. It's all computer based. He's not to happy with his room mate but what can you do.

I wanted to let everyone know that I finally received my DVD today! Going to watch it right now. Hope all the sailors are loving their new positions and doing well.

Hello PIR June 20th! How's everyone doing these days? I hope where ever you live that the weather is treating you nice! Up here in Vermont, it is warm, very warm some days! We've had a lot of rain too but you have to take the good days with the bad ones. LOL I get to talk to Earl when ever I want to now! He is "patiently" (ha ha) waiting to start A school in Pensacola. His first reaction to the weather there was...."IT's HOT HERE"! I think things are going well for him except the waiting for school to start because they have him doing meaningless work. (ie: Seashell Watch, look for seashells in the sand, (there are none) Grass Watch, watch the grass grow....so dumb and the dumbest one of all...Shadow Watch...you have to sweep away your shadow.) I mean come on!!!!!!!!! They could at least let them do kitchen duty or bathroom detail or something constructive! sheesh! Anyway...School will statr soon enough and he will be busy for real!

Take care everyone....I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures!

Kyle is doing well. He has not started A school yet and may be relocated again. He currently resides in the Cole. He has been in ATT, and SCC school. He's hoping to start A school shortly. He really likes his room mate too. But just like the Navy he's going to have a lot of room mates before this is over. Good thing he's good at making new friends. I feel like I need to hear from him everyday and I worry when I don't hear from him. Oh well I better get used to it. There maybe months when I don't here from him in the future. He's able to go off base in street clothes now so he's really happy about that. I just hope he keeps up with his studies. He is in FC studies. They said it's a difficult study program. I'll do everything I can but it's really up to him now. Good to hear from everyone and hope that they are doing as well as Kyle.

Colin is in good spirits but not happy to be waiting until maybe November for A school to start. I have to say, that is nice to know that he will be an expert iron-er and cleaner of anything!
I love being able to call if needed and to be able to send him things he needs. I would love to go see him.
