OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option.

~It is also a good idea to change your visibility settings for your Profile Page (MY PAGE) to "Just my friends".

My son is on Ship 14, Div 197, patiently and anxiously awaiting letter! So hard without him here, but i know was a good decision for him to continue to grow. Husband was in Navy for 8 1/2 years, and we enjoyed!

Eileen:  Liberty for those staying in GL for A School is as follows:

They will move over there as a group shortly after PIR is over.  Takes 2-4 hrs.  You will pick them up over there for Liberty then.  They must return to that base at a certain time that night.  But they will have Liberty on Sat and Sun also....returning to base each night.  They can return to their base with personal items (including cell phones!).

Chronicles 16 just got the address for Div 196 from my daughter's recruiter. So happy! Beyond words! I'd love any info you have on what has been going on there. Did you mean send a friend request over this site? Not if you just put in the name? I had dinner with a friend tonight who has a son in the Navy- she said get used to the no contact. They have to do that to get them ready for ship life.  The first three weeks she says are the hardest, but now it should start getting better for them.  I'm glad to hear that and glad I can start sending letters and book a flight.

@ Chronicles16 I will try...I don't have a Costco membership. Does it matter?

Comment by Chronicles16 on May 17, 2017 at 8:25pm

My Little Bird-  maybe try Costco Travel for the car rental.  Hopefully you will get a bit of a discount that way.

...I am flying in through MDW on the 21st and most agencies are booked. Normally I pay $260-340 for a week's rental. I am paying almost double that for only 5 days. Luckily, I was able to snag a reservation at the Navy Lodge because most of the hotels are full as well and I used Expedia :/

My Little Bird, Have you looked at car rentals through Kayak or one of the other search engines? I am finding cars from thursday morning through Sunday night starting at $105 with unlimited mileage.
