MWR sends the recruit a notice the day before PIR to let them know they have a package to pick up after PIR.  They are allowed to take them back with them.

If you call the 888 number, they will give you two 847 numbers to call:  847-688-6865 and 847-688-2214.

Never seen this before. I don't believe recruits are allowed packages - only letters. Sailors can get packages. How about Hickory Farms?

http://www.hickoryfarms.com/category.asp?c=600
I know they can't get care packages during BC. However, since these are delivered the day of PIR and they are from MWR  (and advertised in the brochure our recruit, now sailor, sent to us), I would think they are acceptable. The advertisement even is aimed at families who can't attend PIR (like us).  I just don't want to send it if it is going to cause him embarrassment or be a total waste of money.
I just order the care package for my son who is graduating March 25 and they were very nice on the phone. answered questions that I had. She also said that a lot of the graduates families do order this for them and they are excited about receiving it.  My sister and I are going to the graduation but a lot of the family are not able to attend so I thought this would be a good thought.

Kathleen, I think I read that they are delivered the day of PIR and that they are allowed to take the items back to their ships after PIR. Of course, I cannot find where I read it. Have you send them an email ( enlistedrec@mwrgl.com) or called (888-317-6971)? When you have an answer, please post it here for others to read. I am going to post the question on the RTC Facebook wall.

Yes, you are correct.  What I am trying to ascertain is if anyone has any firsthand knowledge of actually getting them.  Are they a waste of my money?  Are they so cheesy that the other sailors are going to laugh at my mine for getting it?  From the website I gave in the original post, I can see exactly what is included.  I just don't know if I'd rather spend the $20 on an NEX card for him or something else instead.
I know my son would prefer the NEX card, so he could buy what he likes.

From the Recruit Command on Facebook:  Recruits are able to keep the MWR Care Packages. Please call MWR at 888-317-6971 for delivery details.

Thanks YMM for posting the question.  I had emailed MWR but still have not gotten any response.

Now that you have some responses, perhaps you edit this discussion AND REPLACE original text (because it's in form of a question) WITH TEXT THAT CONSOLIDATES ALL THE INFORMATION from the comments SO THE IMPORTANT STUFF IS AT THE TOP. GOOD QUESTION BTW.

The discussions in this group are REFERENCE TOPICS - to PROVIDE answers to typical and frequently asked questions. We need to keep questions off the Discussions; otherwise, the whole group would be like any other group and purpose defeated.

We are trying to discourage people from just posting question after question.

Sure.  I will change it.

I would like to point out, however, that I couldn't find anything, anywhere on this entire site that mentioned these care packages.  I also didn't think the question really fit into a specific group (for a specific PIR date) since these are available to all PIRs.

Are you an admin of this site?

There is a Care Package Idea group.

http://www.navyformoms.com/group/carepackageideas  I too had looked at their comments and they pertained more to "general package ideas" rather than anything that would apply specifically during PIR. I know your discussion here and subsequent information posted will help many new members.

Thank you for being here and thank your sailor too.

BQB - just another mom.

This is what I found on Navy Dads page.....The care package consists of a commemorative coin, a commemorative t-shirt, a movie pass (Ross Theater), a coupon book to local mall ($750 in savings), an pre-paid phone card (to call home), a homemade cookie, a candy bar and a personalize message to let your recruit know you are thinking of them on this proud day. All of this is nicely packaged in a gift box with the RTC Command Seal and your personalized message! The order deadline is the Thursday before the graduation day.

This site has info you need regarding care packages that can be purchased or your sailor as a gift given to them on graduation day (PIR) only.
