I was afraid this would happen. Everyone told me to relax, that I would get my son's mailing address from boot camp a couple weeks after he went in. I haven't heard from him and it's been 2 weeks. I want his mailing address so I can send him a letter. Now I'm told that because of the "privacy act" I'm not allowed to get his address. I know he's busy surviving boot camp and doesn't have time/energy to make sure I have his info. Also, his father is probably receiving the grad packet and all, won't share...and I'm left out in the cold.

Before I lose all hope and resign myself to having no contact with my son, whom I raised, and not being allowed to send him a letter or attend his graduation, I'll ask you...is there anything I can do to get his mailing address?

My son was told back in December by a Senior Chief Petty Officer that he wanted him to be no less than a Navy Seal. So he has been training since. He passed his PST for Seal and signed paperwork for Seal two weeks ago. Then he got a call yesterday telling him he missed the ASFAT test my eight points, he would have to go in as his orginally job AO and while a A school he could retake the test, but could not take it to then is that true? His date to leave for BC is March 10th. Sure would like some input on this.

My son wants to go active, but he was told that pretty won't happen for 2 years. He's at A school right now and he has taken the long road to get to the Navy. He was a GED student and LOVES the Navy. I'm just wondering when he comes home in April what he choices will be. Given the state of the economy, finding a job it going to be hard. What are his options since it seems going active will be next to impossible. He is currently a CM

Maria - They all have to grow up and leave the nest sometime. Believe me I know exactly what you are going through. After he leaves, it does get easier. A lot of parents go to MEPS for the final swearing in and then to the airport to say goodbye. I think at my son's final swearing in, each young person had someone there for them. So, no he wont get teased. All the young people are feeling nervous and scared and are happy to have a loved one with them. I have never heard of a new sailor going home between boot and a school. You should join the Seal group and ask if its happened that way for them.

Lisa - they will only send out one grad packet. It's between you, your son and your son's dad, who will receive it. Your son is the person who will actually be mailing it to you. Just be sure your name is on the list of those attending. As long as you are on the list, you will be fine. He can have 4 people come to watch him graduate.

My son left for boot camp 2 weeks ago. All of his belongings and paperwork have been going to his Dad's address. I did find out from the recruiter his address and graduation date but the recruiter said he thinks there is a way that I can be put on a list to also receive a graduation packet. Do you know how I would also get this information sent to me?

i entered into the dep on 6 dec 08 and set to ship in late june this year for the navy reserve. i feel that my recruiter and i rushed through the process a little quick. i am currently finishing up my junior year in college and have one year left before i graduate. my recruiter wasnt answering from calls so i wrote him a letter stating that i wish to not continue with the dep this summer but to do this after i finish school next year and sent it certified mail. i havent heard from him since. i was just wondering if it is still possible to re-enter into the dep and join the active navy after school next year without having any type of "hard feelings?"

Wow!! I was amazed and touched by all of you who took the time to answer me. Thank you very much. I will stop my the recruiter's office Tuesday with a written list of questions. Thank you for letting me see that I'm not overreacting about my son leaving. My first two sons moved out & married but lived ten minutes from me. I see them quite often. I guess I've been spoiled and expected the same from my youngest. What a shock to find out otherwise. I seem to take his leaving personal? Like it's against me. I know deep down it's not. But can't help but wonder why he would leave a perfectly loving mother to go through all the things he will in boot camp. I seriously need to learn the navy language. My son is in the DEP(delayed entry program)? He signed up about six months ago but finished his semester of college. We live in Florida. He will be training in Illinois. I assumed we took him to the local recruitrs the day he leaves and that was it. Now I'm hearing I could follow him to Jacksonville Florida (3-4 hours away) to be with him before he leaves. Is that common? It sounds a little Maria Barone-ish. (Everybody Loves Raymond) But I'm willing if it's normal and he's not going to get teased for it!! :) He doesn't talk much. (He's trying to lose the "baby of the family" and "momma's boy" labels). He told me he'd be in boot camp for 8 weeks, graduate, come home for 15 days then possibly head to California for SEAL training? I'm SO CONFUSED!! Being out of the loop makes it so much harder to deal with. Being in denial for the past 5 months didn't help either. I will definitely go see his recruiting officer this week. Thanks again.

Every "A" school is different
Dianne Comment by Dianne on February 15, 2009 at 8:53pm
Andy, the length of A schoold depends on the A school. If that makes sense. Some are longer than others. I think most go for at least 6 weeks. Yes, it counts as your time served.

I have a few questions about "A" school training;
a. how long is "A" school training? a few weeks, few months or up to a year?
b. does "A" school training count towards your "time served"?
thanks for the answers. sign Andy.
