Thank you both so PAO today and they got a messege to him. He called home tonight to find out exactly what he needs to fax home. If his insurance is cancelled then he goes back to square one as an inexperienced driver when he reinstates his insurance. If his insurance is dropped back due to his not having access to his car then he can continue his current driving record so he gets the "experienced driver" rates sooner. Thanks again.

Is the AECF program open to reserves? I know it is a six year contract for enlisted but can someone joining the Navy as a reservists go into AECF?
Thanks,

The initials for intelligence specialist is indeed 'IS.' Dianne is correct that your son will fill out his MGIB paperwork in boot camp. STA-21 is completely separate from the MGIB. If he is interested in becoming an officer, I suggest he submits a STA-21 package whenever he has an opportunity to do so. We had 3 STA-21 candidates at our Family Day DEP meeting on the 22nd and all three of them were picked up off of their first application. You don't know if you will be selected if you don't submit!

Mary, you are kind of in a tough spot. Your son is probably 18+ years old now so the recruiters can't legally give you copies of his orders due to the information that is on them being covered by the Privacy Act of 1974. What you can do is get a hold of his recruiter again and see if they can get a copy faxed direcly to the insurance company. Even better, get a hold of Recruit Training Command, Public Affairs Office. I've heard that they have been able to help out other parents/spouses in a similar situation to yours. I do not have the number off-hand, but I'm sure some of the other Navy super-moms in this forum can help you out with that.

Mary they will go over the GI Bill and Retirement at boot camp and will be given the opportunity to complete the paperwork.

I have a few questions of general interest. 1) My son took off to boot camp with his original copy of his contract. I have tried to get a copy from his recruiter since then for my son's car insurance company. He keeps faxing the page from May when he signed his contract I need a copy of the orders stating that he is currently at Great Lakes. Since I can not directly communicate with him right now I don't know if he still has them in his possesion or if he left them at MEPS on his way. They did not come back in "the box". His insurance is due but he can get a reduced rate since he is unable to drive it right now. 2) What are the initials for an Intelligence Specialist? I S? 3) I was told by another mom that if he wishes to apply for M GI bill he needs to fill out paperwork. Should he do that right after boot camp? He has talked about the STA-21 program, should he still do paperwork for M GI Bill or is that a different issue? Thank you so much for offering answers.

I have often heard that recruiters will say anything, but I have to honestly say that my son's recruiters were top notch! If anyone is in the area of N Alabama, N Ga, or East TN, I would highly recommend going to the recruiting station in Cleveland, TN. These guys went above and beyond the call of duty anytime it was needed. They were always honest and upfront about what to expect and everything they told us turned out to always be the truth.

I agree that sometimes people (especially young, cocky guys - i.e. my son) will hear only what they want to hear. Either way, I don't see how any young person could go wrong with the United States Navy. (Now I sound like a recruiting commercial).

And thanks for the information on ranks. I'm still not getting it, but I will because I'm way to stubborn to give up!

Sue, is your son still in 'A' school? If so, what did he do to in DEP that should have gotten him e-3. Did he refer some people to his recruiter that joined? If this is the case, he may still be able to get his rank. Referrals are good up until he checks in to his first duty station.

Laura A: I teach my sailors that it is easiest to group the enlisted ranks into three groups of three. E1-E3: seaman ranks, E4-E6: petty officers, E7-E9: chief ranks. The letters "CTT" tell others what my job is: cryptologic technician (technical). The 1 means that I am a First Class Petty Officer. From E1 to E9 the abbreviations are as follows: SR SA SN 3 2 1 C CS CM, and of course, the MCPON: master chief petty officer of the navy.

Thank you recruiter, this is awsome info!!!!!
