My son's recruiter told him that he would have to take a test before leaving for boot camp to advance to E2. What he didn't tell him was that he needed to come in and have those items signed off before being allowed to take the test. Needless to say my son went in an E1.

Yes, there is a 5-week school which gives all incoming recruiters the foundation for recruiting in Pensacola, FL.
I don't quite follow your initial statement... DEP members have that ability to complete Personnel Qualification Standards (PQS) while in the DEP. Upon completion, the recruiters will give them a written and or verbal test. If they pass, in conjunction with their physical training test, then the recruiters will do paperwork recommending him or her for advancement. This is placed in the individual's record upon shipping to RTC. Once at BC, his paperwork will be reviewed and be given another test on the PQS and his PT. Provides he passes it, he will be meritoriously advanced to E2.
You moving "could" have had something to do with it.
Your last statement is something we have to face everyday! I can assure you our recruiters want the best for these young men and women just as you do! There is no incentive to say whatever or to intentionally mislead someone! Navy recruiting is quite successful without having to succomb to those types of tactics. I can honestly tell you in the 14 years of doing recruiting.... many young people "choose" to hear what they want to hear or did not fully comprehend "all" the requirements which need(ed) to be met. Unfortunately, we are in a position where we are easy targets for blame.
I hope this shed some light on the situation for you. If not, please let me know and I will do my best to make sure we are all on the same page! Have a Fine Navy evening! :0)

I am curious, is there training that recruiters go to prior to being assigned as such? My son was told that everything had been done for his DEP advancement after boot camp, as in with what he had done as a DEP that he would come out of boot camp (or maybe A school) as an E3. After several weeks in boot camp he was told that his recruiters had not done some paperwork necessary for that to happen. I don't know if it was partially because we moved states while he was still a DEP and so had two recruiting stations responsible for him. I have heard SO many times now that recruiters will say whatever it takes but I don't want to believe that he was deliberately mislead.

Laura A: I teach my sailors that it is easiest to group the enlisted ranks into three groups of three. E1-E3: seaman ranks, E4-E6: petty officers, E7-E9: chief ranks. The letters "CTT" tell others what my job is: cryptologic technician (technical). The 1 means that I am a First Class Petty Officer. From E1 to E9 the abbreviations are as follows: SR SA SN 3 2 1 C CS CM, and of course, the MCPON: master chief petty officer of the navy.

Brady (I'm sorry, I'm still learning Navy ranks and couldn't quite make yours out), Thanks for the info. My son put his request in on the first day they allowed them to do so. Hopefully this means he'll be home for Christmas. I'll go head and purchase his ticket and pray for the best! Thanks for answering my question.

I forgot about that ~ it will tell his strengths (math is the one he is having trouble with) once he passes ASVAB it will take into consideration he is best at another part and qualify him accordingly !! Whew ~~
he needs to pass the math BUt does not mean his rate would have a math background :)
Thanks Scott !!
Ok everyone fingers crossed for Thursdays test :)

Molly~
Keep in mind the ASVAB is an "aptitude" test. Different parts of the test will determine where your son has the strongest aptitude to succeed in the many different jobs we have. Also keep in mind, most applicants choose a job which interests them, therefore they are motivated to succeed. The Navy, as a whole, is committed to NOT having OUR Sailor's fail!
I hope this helps and gives you/him some reassurance! Let us know how the test goes! Have a great day!

Sorry is post is so late, my email isn't working....but in response to the power of attorney:
Each state has specific requirements for a general power of attorney and you can download them for free off the internet, just make sure it's for your state. You cannot file a poa with your local court. You can have the document recorded at the Recorder's Office.
Living wills are also state specific and any hospital will gladly give you the forms and help you fill them out. Some may need to be notorized, depends on your state.
I am not a recruiter, just a mom who worked at Superior Court for 13 different judges over a 12 year span. :) I continue to help people fill out forms and will gladly help anyone here. I cannot give legal advice, just point you in the right direction...
