Ooh you poor thing. My son and I have went through a rough time also. We has the hurry up and wait game for 5 months, he became very discouraged but everything fell through. He had a lot of medical waivers to be processed. I do know that the only jobs avaiable right now are for Spec. Ops.

I talked to the recruiter again this morning - he is the one who actually is assigned to our area - the one we spoke with yesterday was transferring - he was very nice but very discouraging - He said that since he graduated and has his GED he's considered enlisting from "the work force" and they have so many now they are being very picky - he has two underage drinking tickets on his record from when he was 16 and he pretty much told me he'd be rejected - yesterday the recruiter said it would be a hurdle but not necessarily a problem. And of course he can't explain why two different recruiters from two different offices (Raleigh & Eliz City) told us they take TCA cadets w/the GED. So he does have to do at least a semester of college - which is fine- what is disheartening is that he didn't even want to encourage him to enlist b/c of the underage drinking at 16 - This young man started going the wrong way - took his 2nd chance turned his life around is focused, mature, looking for a career & just being shot down. He then said he wouldn't tell him not to try to enlist - but didn't want him to waste his time that the navy was being really picky now b/c all the jobs are filled. But to do the semester of college & check back monthly for the job situation. That it's better to wait for jobs to open up when they will be more lenient than to go through the process right away & be rejected. So........we're in a holding pattern but I guess worse case scenario isn't too bad - if he has to go to college first & then enlist? Might be better in the long run.....

yes, in NC they can only get a GED but in some states like Floriday they can receive a high school diploma - a lot of the cadets joined the national guard or Army, but my son really wants the Navy

KB- I have always been informed that 98% of the kids that complete these type of programs turn to the military? This just really throws me back in my seat. All the kids that go through these programs recieve GEDs correct?

Catalina82- what job are you applying for? The Navy is over manned, but I do know Spec. Ops are getting in faster than anyone. My son joined Spec. Ops, got his date etc. We did a lot of hurry up and wait but it was over waivers, nothing anyone really had control over.
KB- I have never heard of such a thing??? I will ask my son's Recruiter in the morning and see what he says, I will get back with you.

my son saw the local recruiter today - He just graduated from Tarheel Challenge Academy on Friday & had been talking to a recruiter in that area - He was told he could join the Navy with his GED b/c he graduated from the academy (it's run by the national guard) and made a 61 on the asvab. I was told the same when I called the local recruiter to make the appointment. This morning they said that it's now changed and he has to have 15 hours of college credits....So he's enrolling in the local community college and going to have to try again in May.....

Catalina that is what i have heard as well; however, i don't think it would hurt a bit to stay in contact with your recruiter - stop in once a week or so if possible and just ask. Things are moving slow due to high demand to stay in and or join the Navy. My son has been trying to get in for a long time as well - he has not even made a trip to MEPS yet so at least it sounds like you have. Hang in there and it is ok to be a little pushy- you want them to be reminded that you are ready to go!

I been trying to join the Navy for sometime now. I really want to join my brother is in the reserve but I want to join full time. I took the asvab in September and got 61 but then the recruiter never wanted o process me because he says that the were told that there was a hold no take in more people because the Navy is overmaned..... They told me to check back in January.

Any body has any idea about that?

and I took the ASVAB and got 61. Anybody can tell me how can I get my official results?

Thanks

SusanL, I am not a recruiter but my son is going through the same thing. Chris, continues to test for EOD, did get the contract for Rescue Swimmer. Was informed by his Recruiter that the kids will continue to PST, but there are only so many jobs that come open for the positions. That so many are testing that they only take the highest pst. #'s every month. I think he said they take 10 from the regions and from what I was told the regions are pretty big. He will continue to PST while in bootcamp, and will be able to take the contract once it comes avaiable. Does it stae in his contract that he can continue to PSt for another position? I know my son's does.

Hi - I need a recruiter's take on this - my son originally got a contract in Advanced Electronics with a ship date of Jan 4th. He passed a PST weeks ago for Rescue Swimmer and was told it would take about a month for the new contract to come back and that he'd probably get a new ship date. This coming week it will be two months since he was told this. He's been working with a retired SEAL and each time has beat his original PST scores/times. We've been thru hurry up and wait before, but it's hard to know what to make of this. He was offered the chance to test for Rescue Swimmer because they told him some positions had opened up, and he tested the day after they contacted him. any idea what could be holding this up? What happens to his ship date of Jan 4th if the new contract doesn't come in before then? Does he ship out? If the contract then comes in when he is in BC does he get to reclass? Thanks for any info.
