My son is on the USS Kauffman (undesignated), seems to have the impression that they would train him on the ship to be Quartermaster.

Grace, All Quartermasters must attend school, which is at Great Lakes. Feel free to ask any other quetsions, and I'll try to help, since my son is a recent grad. :))

Is it possible to be trained as quartermaster without going to A school?

Hello to all,its been awhile.I can't beleave how many of you are here.That is great,for along time there wasn't many of us.My son is on the USS Nassau LHA4,home port Norfolk.He is coming home sept.22 for two weeks.We haven't seen him for 10 months,can't wait.Again its GREAT to see so many of you. Hey all!! Just checking in to see if your QM sailors had gotten their orders yet. My son just got his and will be heading to Mayport Fla. no later than the 25th of Sept. He should be getting leave soon to come visit us first!! Have a great day!!

Yes, Sandy, in fact, my husband is leaving tomorrow for a business meeting at the U of I. He would love to retire but alas, too many financial woes. The work keeps him mentally stimulated, though.

Thanks Dana. He is going to Mayport at Jacksonville, FL. That was his first choice, so he's really happy.

Carla, I appreciate your kind words! I'll think positive about a leave in October! That's awesome that you know Urbana! Does he come to the U of I? Mike is retired from there.

Sandy, don't give up yet. Your son could possibly get a week leave in October. Our son was able to get a leave two weeks before he left for deployment. The reward for your son's good grades and success in QM school is to be snatched up quickly and put right to work. I checked out your page and saw that we have some similarities. Also, even though we live in NY state my husband travels to Urbana often for his job. We grew up in Paducah, a few hours south of you.

BTM, my son is deployed overseas but his home port is San Diego. Maybe some of the moms in the Japan group could better answer your question. I hope you get to meet him somewhere soon.

Hi Sandy; Congratulations to your son for getting orders so quickly. Were did he get orders to?
