Sandy, don't give up yet. Your son could possibly get a week leave in October. Our son was able to get a leave two weeks before he left for deployment. The reward for your son's good grades and success in QM school is to be snatched up quickly and put right to work. I checked out your page and saw that we have some similarities. Also, even though we live in NY state my husband travels to Urbana often for his job. We grew up in Paducah, a few hours south of you.

BTM, my son is deployed overseas but his home port is San Diego. Maybe some of the moms in the Japan group could better answer your question. I hope you get to meet him somewhere soon.

Hi Sandy; Congratulations to your son for getting orders so quickly. Were did he get orders to?

Wow, our son got his orders today, and he's not even finished with school! He has to report by Sept. 25, and he is hoping to be finished with school by then. Set to deploy in November for 8 months. I can't believe it! It doesn't even look like he'll get to come home after school .... darn it!

Question for everyone with a QM overseas. Our son got deployed to Japan in July. He seems to be working a lot and they have been out to sea since he got there. Do you think it will ever be possible to go visit him? He works so much and is out to sea so much we are wondering if he will ever be somewhere (on land) long enough to see him. Anyone with experience in this?

Sandy, I'm glad it is going so well for your son. We heard recently from our QM son on deployment that things are going well with him, also.

Welcome to seansMoM and to FiSeattle.

Randy, there are two great pictures of the Thatch on Aug. 16th in the photo gallery of the Navy News.

Hi! I thought I'd check in. Our son is now 2/3 of the way through QM School, and he is thriving! His grades are excellent, and I think he is going to make a great Quartermaster. Yay!

Hello !! ...I am also new to this group....my son is a QM3 (SW) / Master Helmsman...he is serving aboard the USS Vicksburg.... and on his 2nd deployment....I have been reading some of your concerns on here, maybe I can help ?
FiSeattle Comment by FiSeattle on July 23, 2009 at 1:36pm
Hello All...
I am new to N4M's and just love it! My 21 yo son is on hold for MEPS right now getting some of his legal affairs straightened out. He should be able to complete MEPS within a month but has already taken the ASVAB and thinks he wants to sign up as a Quartermaster. Like Judy (in the discussion forum) I have so many concerns but also think this probably is the best job for him as he really wants to 'do a navy job' and travel. He & I are very detail oriented & like to be in 'control' so maybe this is the best possible match. My concern right now is that he doesn't have to wait to long for this rate to be available as he hopes to ship out to boot camp ASAP after MEPS. Are there usually openings for this job or is it something you typically have to wait around for?
Anyway, so glad to be here and thanks for all the welcomes' so far!...
God Bless our Sailors and their Families!

Hi all ..

It has been a long while since I posted. Since then, our son went to boot camp, graduated and then went through SCC school at Great Lakes. He's currently on hold for QM School, and he's very enthusiastic about it. He said it might only be another week.

I guess it is only now that I feel like a real member of the group, since he is actually about to begin his training. I will be around more often now!

Wow, Randy. Your son and mine are on the same deployment. The Gridley and the Thach were just in the same port together. You might want to join the group that was formed for their strike group: CCSG7 USS Ronald Reagan Strike Group. There are other Thach parents in the group.
